Why is it important?

Quality Dapps, products and integrations will increase the utility & adoption of Cardano.

What does success look like?

Novel and viable applications and products get built on top of Cardano attracting users. Integrations manage to pull in more adoption.

Key Metrics to measure

Key metrics to measure

To assess the challenge we will be asking ourselves: Did our efforts manage to attract users to the platform? Did our efforts result in new, viable applications and products built on top of Cardano?

Overview

Dapps, Products & Integrations is focused on the following areas:

Creation or improvement of different Dapps, products, and integrations that provide value to the Cardano community and wider ecosystem.

Integrations with other existing services, products, and protocols that improve the end-user experience whether that’s giving the user more options or making something easier to use that benefits the wider ecosystem.

Challenge brief

Why this category is important

Cardano needs a thriving ecosystem of different Dapps, products and integrations for the community to use that increasingly become the better alternatives over current centralized providers.

The more interesting and useful the products and integrations are that can be built in the ecosystem the more reasons people have to interact with the Cardano blockchain that can help further drive more adoption, feedback, growth and even more innovations.

Types of proposals to include

DeFi - Stable coins, DEXs, borrow & lending, synthetic assets, etc.

Marketplaces

Gaming - Open world games, card games, RPG, etc.

Transport & logistics

Hardware - Hardware wallets, Local ATMs for interacting with the blockchain, etc.

Physical products - Tokenised housing as a Cardano native asset, International crypto headquarters and liason office on every continent, etc.

Social media

Nation governance systems - New governance systems for nation-states

Environment - Solutions that help to solve environmental issues

Many others - Any other idea, product or integration that someone thinks should be built in the Cardano ecosystem!

Potential success metrics for proposal types

This list is not exhaustive but does provide some ideas for proposers to consider.

DeFi - Total value locked, the total number of users, number of active daily/weekly/monthly users

Marketplaces - Total number of users, number of transactions performed

Gaming - Number of players, player income generated (if play to earn), qualitative feedback on game experience, etc.

Transport & logistics - Total number of packages tracked, Number of counterfeit items prevented

Hardware - Number of items sold, number of total users, number of interactions with hardware solution

Physical products - Number of products tokenised as a native asset, Number of people using physical solutions

Nation governance systems - Amount of population onboarded, amount of costs saved due to new solution, security difficulty improvements over previous approach

Social media - Total number of users, number of meaningful interactions

Environment - Total number of users, total CO2 sequestered, amount of awareness being produced, number of people changing an environmentally damaging habit

Many others - Proposers can add in whatever metrics or success criteria make sense for their own project!

Considerations for proposers

Existing products or integrations - What products or integrations already exist in the ecosystem? What are the core differences between the proposal being presented and those existing ones and why will that provide impact to the ecosystem?

Technical requirements - Does the Cardano ecosystem have the right tools, libraries and SDKs for the idea to be feasible? What needs to be introduced or improved for the proposal to fully reach its potential?

Ecosystem maturity requirements - Why is this product or integration suitable for execution right now? Are there enough pieces of infrastructure, applications or other integrations available that would be needed for this suggested proposal to have a strong chance of gaining adoption? For instance, if you were making a professional social network DApp, do the right identity tools and wallets exist to make a professional network feasible?

In closing:

The potential opportunities that Catalyst can provide to genuine dapp and product developers have increased substantially. A 32x increase in the span of a year.

At the same time, it’s now up to the Catalyst community to drive the direction of the experiment by setting the challenges that provide funding opportunities for developers.

We, in the Catalyst community, need to change our perspective on the nascent experiment and enable it to grow up.

It’s time for the Catalyst community to step up and provide developers with the challenges that will unlock the funds they need to be able to develop for, and on Cardano with confidence.

It’s time to think big!

Challenge amounts should only be proposed in increments of $25K. Other amounts not in these increments will be rounded up. E.g. $27,500 will be rounded up to $50,000. Requested funds in USD 5500000\n\n\n\n\n\n

Creating good quality Dapps and products matches Fund 9 strategic goal #3 about app ecosystem. The challenge setting proposal is well detailed and include proposal examples.

However the range of Dapps is very wide : from DeFi to physical products, and even gaming apps. In previous Catalyst Funds, specific and different challenges have been set for Defi and for Gaming apps for example. Voters would probably be very confused when reading proposal in this challenge, because they would be very various from each other.

The challenge team states in the proposal comment it is aware of the risk of overlapping other challenges but consider that there is a risk of having funds misallocated because they are split between to many categories.

I consider that the risk for Cardano is higher that voters will be confused, and Fund allocation decision making will lose in quality.

I recommend to the challenge team to rephrase and resubmit this proposal with a more specific range of dapps and products, focusing on some of the examples listed.

Dapps, Products & Integrations challenge provides great freedom to participants of the challenge to innovate and grow the Cardano ecosystem. Less constraints, a higher budget, great examples of project categories for inspiration. In addition to the flexibility for future participants, this challenge also goes well with the Fund9 Challenge Setting objectives - so a win win for everyone!

This challenge is in my opinion the most important one in projects Catalyst. It’s the one for building DApps, building the tools that allow people to create DApps and ultimately, the challenge that is the backbone of development on Cardano. Why it’s important is clear: for the Cardano ecosystem to grow, people need to want to use it; for them to want to use it, cool tools and applications must exist; for these tools and applications to exist, there needs to be funding. The key metrics to measure will be the numbers of users of Cardano DApps, total value locked in these DApps, transaction volumes etc. I think that the above is proof enough that this challenge is very critical to achieving Cardano’s mission (score: 5).

This challenge aims to incentivize the creation of apps, digital and physical products, and collaboration with digital services and protocols that can grow the number of users in the Cardano ecosystem. Obviously, this is fully aligned with the Fund8 Challenge Setting Objectives: make substantial contributions to the Cardano ecosystem and accelerate its growth. The authors provide a list of 10 example categories (such as DeFi, marketplaces, physical products, etc.) which gives insights to future proposers helps them to evaluate the alignment of their ideas with the challenges. Given the above, I believe that this challenge has the highest possible alignment with the Fund9 Challenge Setting objectives.

This is a consolidation of several historical challenges, all focused on growing Cardano’s ecosystem. Why the consolidation is good: 1) it engages more voters since they need to review fewer challenges. 2) it engages more proposers since the challenge requirements are less restrictive. 3) it ensures that a bigger budget goes to what really matters to users - new products, apps, and integrations.

Considering the very wide range of Dapps that can fit in this challenge, I have no doubt that the community will be able to make good quality proposals.

Guiding questions for proposers can be improved by being more focused on some of the multiple subjects that are listed.

The challenge team has thought to proposers by offering a wide frame for proposals, but I recommend also considering voters, and look for solutions to facilitate the voting process. An example can be taken from the miscellaneous challenge.

This challenge is a rethinking of historical funded challenges. Thus, the Catalyst community is long in “been there, done that” mode and will have no problems with addressing this challenge.

Can the Catalyst community address this chllange? Absolutely - Catalyst is the community of builders of digital products. Is there an established challenge team? That’s not clear. The proposal comes from only a single author.

The objectives of this challenge are feasible. This is about building the DApps we have been so excited to see come online, like SundaeSwap, MuesliSwap, MinSwap, ccvault.io, Nami etc. This challenge is one of the places where these big names that put Cardano on the map come for funding. Again, the total amount of funds here has increased, this time to 5.5 million USD and that is a great thing, because development in the blockchain industry costs an enormous amount of money. We can’t compete with other ecosystems if we don’t fund our developers properly. The fact that the DApps and wallets that I mentioned above have been so successful in the last few months (over 300 million USD TVL so far) is all the proof we need that people in this ecosystem are capable of addressing this challenge (score: 5).

Given the objective of the challenge to develop new digital and physical products based on Cardano, the Cardano community has all the skills and expertise necessary to successfully address the challenge. The only concern that I have is that the challenge comes from a single proposer, and no additional details about the Challenge team are presented. Since the challenge requests $5.5M in funding, this means that a lot of projects can consider creating proposals and having a larger team to support them can be necessary to realize the full potential.

Many success criteria and metrics are defined for the various types of proposal. I’m convinced that if proposers follow this guidance, then the community will be able to track the progress of proposals in this challenge.

Which metrics are proposed? new applications, products, users, integrations. Can these metrics measure progress in addressing the challenge? Of course! What can better measure the progress of a challenge focused on DApps, Products, and Integrations that exactly the number of applications, products and integrations. All good.

The success criteria for this challenge is very clear and easy to verify. It’s about how many DApps will be built as a result of funding received here, how many users these will attract, how much TVL they will grow to etc (score: 5).

The author states that the primary metrics to measure are the attracted users and newly-created viable applications and products. These are specific and measurable metrics, which are perfectly aligned with the Challenge Setting objective of growing the Cardano Ecosystem. In addition, the author provides additional example success metrics to guide the future proposer for each of the 10 example sub-categories of proposals. This provides additional clarity and makes the challenge more verifiable. For the above reasons, I find this proposal to be highly verifiable.
