Yoroi Cardano Wallet:  A review

Summary

  • The Yoroi wallet provides a simple newcomer-friendly interface for Cardano ADA holders to receive and send ADA and NFTs, vote, and manage their stake pool delegation.
  • Yoroi gets high rating for its ease for getting started in Cardano via browser or mobile, however there’s lots of room to grow in the areas of stability and customer support.

Yoroi is an open-source Cardano and Ergo wallet developed and maintained by Emergo, one of the founding entities of Cardano. Yoroi is good for sending and receiving ADA, voting on Project Catalyst proposals, and managing your stakepool delegation. Yoroi is classified as a light wallet because it doesn’t run the entire blockchain in your browser or mobile device, but instead connects to Emergo servers remotely to read and post transactions to the Cardano network.

Yoroi has been around since 2018, with no known security incidents to date. Because Yoroi is a light wallet, getting started, creating a passphrase, and beginning your Cardano journey takes less than 10 minutes.

With the Yoroi mobile app for android and iphone you can check your balance, buy and send NFTs, and do all of the same things you can do with Yoroi desktop.

When things go awry, you can get support by sending a message via Yoroi’s website. Yoroi also encourages the use of the Cardano forum and the Cardano Community Tech Support Telegram “Lobby” for support.

For most of the non-power users I’ve helped onboard with Yoroi, they found the interface and user experience to be friendly and intuitive… once they got past the crypto-digital-money concept. Importing your private key from another wallet takes only a few minutes. The interface is separated into tabs: a dashboard, plus a tab for each action a user can perform. You can use Yoroi with multiple passphrases, and with Ledger or Trezor hardware devices.

I give Yoroi a UI/UX rating of 4.

I was impressed with the easy set up of my yoroi wallet, and I have had no issues with it since. It seems secure and is easy to navigate.

Sometimes it is slow to process transactions at times of high volume

I reached out to Yoroi’s support during my research. One time it took 3 days, and another time 2 days to receive a response. That seems to be on the long end of what is typically expected for customer support. Consensus among other users is that Yoroi’s in-house support takes at least a day, and that finding help from the community in Telegram is faster. If you’re an internet native coming from other online communities, Telegram, Discord, Reddit, and other forums may be easy to find and use. For many however, these channels of communication may be unfamiliar and difficult to navigate. It also may not be intuitive for those who are new to “decentralized” communities to trust third-party or “community support” channels.

I give Yoroi a Support rating of 3.

One downside of using Yoroi for many people is how “buggy” it is. LIDO Nation delegators have had issues ranging from the app crashing after entering a pin, to errors when withdrawing rewards, or problems submitting transactions.

What’s worse, even announced and known bugs and problems with the wallet often take days or weeks to be resolved by Emurgo.

For crypto users, certain events can be time sensitive: whether that’s buying an NFT before it sells out, or registering to vote before the snapshot, you need to be able to trust that your wallet will do what you need it to do, when you need it. No software is perfect, and there will always be bugs, but the frequency and length of bugs in the Yoroi software seems excessive.

I give Yoroi a Reliability rating of 2.

Yoroi doesn’t really publish a roadmap. A few weeks ago they posted some teasers about upcoming features on Twitter, but no one I know has been able to see or use these supposed new features in their wallet. Unlike other core developers in Cardano, Yoroi doesn’t have a Discord, Telegram, or YouTube channel with regular updates. There is no published cadence for when updates will happen. It is anyone’s guess if Yoroi will continue to be supported for the ever-changing landscape of mobile devices. We don’t know if new Cardano functionalities will be added to Yoroi - like running a DApp for example. Without knowing that there is a clear roadmap and commitment to keep supporting and developing Yoroi, we hesitate to continue to recommend it to newcomers, especially with more wallet vendors entering the space. With most newcomers being mobile device users, it is important to know that whatever mobile wallet we recommend will work with their phone two or three years from now.

I give Yoroi a Reliability rating of 1.

Yoroi is open-source, making it easy for custodianship to be passed on. Yoroi remote servers do not store your passphrase. Transactions that need signing happen locally on your device. Even though there is still some centralization with transactions going through a central server, key operations happening locally on your computer limit the attack vectors associated with centralization.

I give Yoroi a Decentralization rating of 4.
