Detailed Plan
This project aims to support the efforts of experts led by prof. George Church from Harvard University to de-extinct the woolly mammoth.
BACKGROUND
Over the last 12 thousand years the human population has grown from about 2m to nearly 8b today. On our journey to dominate the world we did a lot of irreversible damage to our planet. We contributed to the extinction of numerous species of animals and it's been found that our population growth is directly correlated with more species becoming extinct.
Thanks to science we can reflect on this - save many endangered species which contribute to the Earth's well-being by expanding biodiversity.
A genetic project called Colossal led by Prof. George Church from Harvard University aims to change the course of history by bringing extinct species back to life.
There are very solid foundations for choosing the woolly mammoth as the subject of this impressive effort. Firstly, due to the genetic similarity to the Asian elephant it is relatively easy to biologically revive it. Secondly, it has been scientifically proven that mammoth activities, grazing patterns and migrations support the planet's ecosystems. The recreated species will be comfortable in temperatures as low as minus 40 Celsius, which will have a great positive impact on its geographic prevalence. And, finally, as the science has also determined that humans played an important role in mammoths extinction, we believe we owe it to them and we want to help!
How we plan to form the Mammoth DAO
With huge animals come huge responsibilities. That's why we want to ensure our DAO is controlled by the greatest minds in the fields of science, genetics, biology, ethics and animal psychology/behaviour.
We want to make a campaign to attract people from academic background who will run this operation with the 60% majority of vested votes which will be released to each expert's private wallet over the course of the de-extinction experiment depending on their contributions. During the DAO building campaign we need to design a referral scheme where the academics involved in the project can refer their peers.
The other 40% will be divided between anyone interested in this project including the indigenous people living in remote areas.
DAO operations
The mammoth.foundation (yours truly) will be the Mammoth DAO operator.
Communication and public relations will be handled by mammoth.news (Slawek).
The Mammoth DAO will need to make plenty of decisions, i.e
What should be the size of the first de-extinct mammoth herd?
What name should be given to each mammoth?
In which location should the experiment be conducted?
What should be the insurance policy against damage caused by a mammoth?
etc…
The successful restoring of woolly mammoths will help:
1. Decelerate melting of the arctic permafrost
2. Prevent the emission of greenhouse gases trapped within the permafrost layer - up to 600 million tons of net carbon annually
3. Revert over-shrubbed forests back into natural arctic grasslands, which help with carbon emissions
4. Restore the Mammoth Steppe
5. Foster an ecosystem that can maintain its own defenses against climate change
6. Understand the dominant traits among cold-resistant genomes
7. Save modern elephants from extinction
8. Establish a proven link between genetic sciences and climate change
9. Equip nature with a resilience against humanity's adverse effects on vital ecosystems
10. Drive advancements in multiplex CRISPR editing
11. Reduce number of forest fires in remote areas
12. Remind us of mankind's wrong-doings and over-exploration of our planet's resources
