This project will be complete on Dec 31, and we are so proud of what we have accomplished, and where we might go next! This project funded the construction of a physical Cardano blockchain lab building in Nairobi Kenya, and to employee mentees to both learn and start contributing to the Cardano ecosystem. Further funded projects in later funds mean that we currently have work to keep these new Cardanians keeping the lab lively into 2023. Several new collaborations within the Cardano ecosystem also offer potential for future work and expansion. Stopping now to save some words for our final report, coming in early January.
One of lidonation's mentee that just finished our mentorship program with me has been onboarded to help with the development of the project.
We have have a game plan, with the stability of lucid we're rewriting some of the prefunded transaction builder and wallet integration code. New repo will live at https://github.com/lidonation/goaskada.com. Expect to start pushing actual code with in the week or two.
Translation work has been delivered by the community team. We have onboarded two new developers to the developer mentorship program. Existing developer mentees are delivering on work tickets and meeting with our lead mentor 2x/week. Our Community team is partnering with DirectEd.dev on their Nairobi pilot. Our translators have signed on to work with Gero Wallet to provide a Swahili translation. The Lab is looking to finish strong in December and we are thinking about ways to continue the work in 2023 and beyond.
It has been a busy month! Developer mentee Michael Ochara has hit a great stride and is delivering great work alongside lab mentor Darlington Kofa. Two more developer mentees are in the interview process now. Darlington is trialing a newly developed, more structured approach to the mentorship, which so far is working out well. Lab lead Stephanie took a trip to visit the lab in person. It was a fruitful visit making in-person connections with the Kenya team. While there we met with another Project Catalyst funded project DirectEd, and are working on possible partnerships with the lab. The translation team continues work on written and audio article translations in Swahili. The marketing and outreach team completed a PA training course with 6 new PA recruits. Looking forward to seeing what they are able to accomplish as PAs in Fund 10!
We have interviewed 2 new candidates for developer mentorship at the lab. New mentees will start mentorship work with Darlington when the selection process is complete in the next few weeks. Outreach officers at the lab have recruited a team of 3 newcomers to train in on how to serve as PAs for Project Catalyst F10. They are using a new FREE PA training curriculum that was just developed by Lido Nation and published at blockchainlearning.center. The team participated in leading a global learning seminar about blockchain and Cardano with "United People Global" unitedpeople.global – a global community of learners who want to make the world a better place. The seminar was well attended and well received! It was recorded, but we are still waiting to get a copy of the recording, so we can hopefully share it later. The seminar took place in early September. Project Lead Stephanie King is travelling from Minnesota, USA to to Lab in Nairobi next week, to work with the lab crew in-person, and start planning for the future of the lab! This trip is funded out of Stephanie's personal funds, not Project Catalyst, but it is nevertheless an exciting opportunity to strengthen Cardano's community across continents!
The developer mentorship program has added a third mentee. The outreach and marketing crew has completed one round of PA training and participation in Fund 9, and their next job is recruiting new PA trainees for Fund 10. They are also going to start maintaining a calendar of Catalyst and Community events as a public service.
Our Community Outreach officers used the attached document to train up on Cardano and Catalyst, and to work as PAs in the recent Fund 9 round. Starting in August, they will be training new locals in Kenya to work as PAs. The Developer Mentee program added a third mentee in the last week.
The attached video is a walk-through of the physical Cardano Lab that was built in Nairobi Kenya for this project! Last week we celebrated the "Grand opening" of the physical lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lab participants now have a quiet, dedicated space, with new equipment funded by this project, to participate in Cardano work.
Community officers at the Kenya Hub are training to be CAs (training documentation attached) as a way to get more involved in the community, and learn a useful skill that they can share with others.
The short and the end is it works! We have a ci/cd pipeline that can now mass translate catalyst data with the setting of a parameter. The API (will be made public sooon), supports the Accept-Language header to localize data returned. This is the API powering the voter tool at https://www.lidonation.com/zh/project-catalyst/voter-tool. This will be demoed as well on townhall this wednesday the 27th!
5 Cardano Lab mentees are engaged in developer mentorships, swahili content creation, and cardano/catalyst research. In the coming month we will launch the website and twitter account for the Lab. The lab now has an official name!>> Ngong Road Blockchain Lab
The system to automatically translate proposals as well as provide a ui for humans to qa is live! Here's fund 7 in japanese. https://www.lidonation.com/ja/cardano-treasury
Bug fixing and crossing t and i are in the works, then we will run a job to run all proposal data through deepl translation api. Before we do this, we also need to port proposal details off ideascale.
We met with the Kenya HUB Steering committee to finalize HUB launch details, and we have finalized the first 5 part-time staff of the HUB, with plan to onboard another part-time intern in May. Preparations are in progress, including sending funds to secure new computers, furniture, and equipment as outlined in the HUB plan, and the "Official" opening day of the Kenya Cardano Lab is set for April 1.
