Solution

Detailed Plan

Rational

To accelerate adoption of Decentralized Identity there needs to be an boarding mechanism for individuals without relying on centralized entities. Decentralized organizations or organizations that are not recognized by centralized entities would be at disadvantage.

BrightID is an Etherioum based SSI platform that uses social authentication and recovery.

A statement from BrightID website

"What is BrightID?

BrightID is a public good that exists for the benefit of humanity. It is a nonintrusive, decentralized, open-source technology seeking to reform identity verification–and thus lay the groundwork for a free and democratic society.

BrightID is a social identity network that allows people to prove to applications that they aren't using multiple accounts. It solves the unique identity problem through the creation and analysis of a social graph."

BrightID allows individuals to prove their uniqueness without the need for centralised service through their social connections starting from family. BrightID requires no ID number, birth certificate or address. The only thing required to authenticate the uniqueness of a person is a picture and a name that can be changed any time. Social relationships and online and offline activities define the levels of verification and trust an individual has with respect to another individual or group.

BrightID also employs social recovery to recover a lost account. All data is saved on one's own devices.

Porting this tool to Cardano would complement Atala Prism and accelerate mass decentralized identity (DID) adoption. Communities that are scattered around the world due to natural or man made disasters can reconnect safely without the need for centralized bodies. And it will also take some load off entities that require centralized authentication and can be used as an entry point towards legally mandated authentication.

Inquiry at BrightID discord server got the following reply.

" BrightID is chain or web2/web3 agnostic at its core. Do check out <https://dev.brightid.org/> for v5 api documentation, where you may find how it may work as it is, with Cardano.

There is optional EVM-chain specific SC templates for verified user registry and sponsorships in github. Those could be studied and ported permissionlessly to work with the API.

Once you study the resources provided, you may also have a pretty good idea about the cost. Integrations are pretty straight forward and simple."

Community organizations such as Iddir in Ethiopia as proposed for fund 7 need a simple social-authentication and recovery enabled SSI solution. see <https://cardano.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Decentralized-Autonomous-Iddir/381135-48088>

Budget

Estimated 300 work hours at $30 an hour (This will change with input from developers.)
