Solution

Create Japanese translations for the most popular Cardano bridges and follow through to ensure the text is implemented. All visible text, UI, error messages, input fields, etc. will be translated.

Problem:

Japan has a large Cardano community, but the major Cardano bridges do not yet have any Japanese localization. This limits the Japan community's ability to access these parts of the ecosystem.

This proposal was approved and funded by the Cardano Community via Project F9: Grow East Asia, Grow Cardano Catalyst funding round.

[IMPACT] Please describe your proposed solution.

We will provide Japanese translations for all visible text, UI elements, error messages, text input fields, and other areas that require translation on each of the major inter-chain bridges supporting Cardano. Specifically, this task will cover the SingularityNET, Iagon, and Milkomeda bridges.

[IMPACT] Please describe how your proposed solution will address the Challenge that you have submitted it in.

Japanese users who want to bridge tokens to and from Cardano currently have no choice but to use Google Translate (or similar) or else struggle through using the English version of the bridge interface. We will provide all of the translations required for each of these bridges to implement a Japanese version. More Japanese users will use these bridges once they each have a Japanese-language interface.

[IMPACT] What are the main risks that could prevent you from delivering the project successfully and please explain how you will mitigate each risk?

Liaising with each of the first parties (SingularityNET, Iagon, dcSpark) will be necessary. We at L10NMODE have long experience creating translations related to blockchain and Cardano in particular, so we are not likely to need to submit any queries about the text itself. But cooperation will be needed to get the translated text actually published to each respective live site.

However, we have planned ahead for this by contacting each of these parties ahead of time explaining our intensions, and as we have worked closely with some of these teams in the past (and edited text files directly in their respective GitHub repositories where relevant), no roadblocks are expected along these lines.

In the worst case, if one or more of the first parties is unable or unwilling to quickly implement a language toggle to put the translated text online, then we will use the translated text to create a localized Japanese guide document that users can refer to while using the English interface. This document would be hosted by L10NMODE and no action from the first party would be required.

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed plan, including timeline and key milestones for delivering your proposal.

Step 1: Reach out to each first party to explain the process and obtain a list of strings. If none is provided, compile a list of strings manually from the source of each target website.

-- Deadline: 1 week after task start

Step 2: Translate all of the strings for each target site.

-- Deadline: 6 weeks after task start

Step 3: Deliver the translated text and coordinate with each first party to get the text implemented. There are free tools that assist with this step and we can provide assistance using them as needed. In the case of Milkomeda, text translations are handled on GitHub and CrowdIn (using a system that we previously implemented) so there will already be a system in place to plug in the translated text directly. This system can also serve as a model for the other bridges, if they wish to use it.

-- Deadline: 8 weeks after task start

Step 4: Review the translated text and apply any necessary fixes

-- Deadline: 9 weeks after task start

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed budget breakdown.

Reviewing the amount of text on each of the 3 target bridge sites and allowing a buffer for additions, changes, etc., we estimate a cost of $4300 for full English-to-Japanese translation of all 3 sites. On top of that, the time and work required to coordinate and assist each of the first parties in getting the text online, followed by testing and LQA will amount to an additional $1500. This will be the total cost to get all of the text translated and provide all of the necessary support to get the text online at all 3 bridge sites.

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide details of the people who will work on the project.

L10NMODE is a team of translators and writers who have worked within the Cardano ecosystem for more than 5 years. It is headed by Leo King, who translated and supported Yoroi Wallet as localization manager and customer support lead at EMURGO, then translated Flint Wallet and supported Milkomeda while creating documentation for users and developers as technical writer and global content lead at dcSpark.

[FEASIBILITY] If you are funded, will you return to Catalyst in a later round for further funding? Please explain why / why not.

No. This is a one-time task. However, if the outcome is good I may submit new proposals to extend these translations to additional languages, or translate other Cardano bridges or Dapps in the future.

[AUDITABILITY] Please describe what you will measure to track your project's progress, and how will you measure these?

At each of the milestones listed above, we will post an update on our website http://lionmode.io tracking the progress of this task.

[AUDITABILITY] What does success for this project look like?

Each of the 3 target bridges have Japanese language support enabled, with no missing text or incorrect translations, and the Japanese community is freely making use of the bridges.

[AUDITABILITY] Please provide information on whether this proposal is a continuation of a previously funded project in Catalyst or an entirely new one.

This is a new proposal.
