Detailed Plan

Purpose of Proposal:

To some degree most programmers will need to know some level of English to be competitive in today's global job market/economy. But how do we catch these people that didn't even know they would be interested in such a path?

It is one thing for someone who knows that they want to delve into the black hole of Distributed Ledger Technology, but it is something else to even get people to come into this space when they had no interest or exposure to begin with. Therefore it is crucial to have introductory information available in as many languages as possible in order to spark interest in young people to even consider becoming programmers or get involved in Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology.

At WADA, our education approach has two main targets:

Governments/Entrepreneurs (less technical audience) We seek to educate the general public in Cardano as well as the broader topic of Distributed Ledger Technology in order to encourage people into the space, and start getting government and banking officials to accept this technology. This will be very important especially in countries where such officials are already hesitant and are starting to implement legislation or other obstacles that provide significant roadblocks to adoption.

Developers (technical training) We want to focus on training developers in functional programming languages such as Haskell, Plutus, and Elm so we can actually implement this incredible technology to solve specific problems.

Our goal is to get people onboard, and also provide the technical backup to be able to actually follow through with specific projects and solutions that use DLT.

How do we impact the challenge?

WADA's network is rapidly expanding and every day we have new developers looking to join us. Given our current developer capacity we are limited in how many projects we can take on at once. We now want to focus our education efforts on training all incoming developers and providing them with a certification so that we can expand our impact. This means offering our training and introductory materials in different languages to encourage diversity in our network. This will be crucial to WADA's sustainability as it will allow us to easily connect entrepreneurs to skilled blockchain developers on many levels and ultimately help them implement their solutions within the WADA network and on the Cardano Blockchain.

How do we address the challenge?

We have already gathered an intimate group of developers who are eager to train others and who are comfortable using functional programming languages. We now want to focus on getting this group together and to train a few more individuals (our group is multilingual with languages spoken including: French, Italian, Arabic–they all have English in common). These trainings will be in English and then the individual trainers will be responsible for creating content in parallel in their own native languages.

Roadmap

0-3 months: Gather our group of original trainers and launch WADA's official training for trainers. The team will be following an advanced Haskell course from <https://typeclasses.com/> an online course put together by Julie Moronuki, one of the authors of Haskell Programming from First Principles. In addition to following these classes the group will meet twice a week to go over exercises together and plan curriculum development and content creation. After the initial two months of training we will officially launch WADA's Functional Programming Content Creation/Curriculum Development meetups open to a slightly wider circle of the WADA developer community (but not yet ready for the general public). These meet-ups will be geared at opening up the discussion about curriculum development and to encourage the developer ecosystem (see related proposal for other meet-ups and events on WADA's horizon in Developer Ecosystem).

3-6 months: Continue advanced training moving on to Plutus, and continuing to develop curriculum and engage WADA devs with regular developer meet-ups. Launch WADA awareness campaign advertising for upcoming training in functional programming. Marketing and other awareness materials to be made in different languages especially French and Arabic.

6-9 months: Launch WADA developer training registration and marketing outreach that will be open to all, available in English, French and Arabic. (hoping for other languages as well–will seek more multilingual team members join!) Final project to prove technical skills will include re-doing the WADA website/web-app using functional programming languages.
