Many developing countries face significant problems with land tenure, which refers to the rules and processes regarding land ownership and usage. These issues can hinder foreign direct investment, reduce personal security, and make it difficult for individuals to accumulate wealth. Additionally, stable land tenure systems are crucial for economic growth because they provide the trust and security needed as a foundation for economic activities. When trust in government institutions weakens, it can lead to unrest and violence among citizens who feel compelled to resolve disputes themselves. A recent example of this can be seen in Kasoa, Ghana, where land disputes have led to violent incidents.
We will establish a dedicated, non-governmental organization (NGO) advocacy group that leverages Cardano's blockchain technology to address and resolve land tenure issues. We choose this route for these reasons:
- There is a desire for blockchain solutions to land tenure in Ghana due to significant rates of violence due to land rights disputes. Land disputes are a common and complex issue in Ghana, accounting for about 70% of cases in police stations and courts. These disputes often arise when one party claims ownership of a land parcel already purchased by another.
- Current methods of recourse are either ineffective or inaccessible due to various legal fees and corruption. This creates a situation in which the most vulnerable are taken advantage of, since they lack the wherewithal to fight back.
Creating a forum for victims to express the detailed aspects of their individual plights with those best positioned to help finalize Cardano-based mitigation strategies and solutions already in development will not only increase awareness of land tenure issues, but also provide a long-term forum to catalyze coordinated action around land tenure security issues. This forum will then take the form of an NGO, allowing victims and advocates to leverage their experiences politically. This NGO will engage aggrieved parties, land rights experts, activists, politicians and other relevant stakeholders. Educational content designed to illustrate the effectiveness of the Cardano blockchain will be used to spread awareness, empower victims, and help solve land tenure insecurity.
