[IMPACT]

Many NFT projects are geared toward English-speaking cultures, which inadvertently alienates a large portion of the world. We believe a more cohesive Cardano community is possible through the translation of English-based NFT assets. Translating Duo, the NFT card game on Cardano, into a variety of common languages, not only enables people to experience utility-based NFTs in their language but also provides a more diverse and enriched Cardano community.

Duo is the flagship play-to-earn NFT Game powered by Revelar. Duo brings together humor and CNFTs as an easy-entry NFTs game in the next wave of gaming. Duo aims to bring more people into crypto and does so through humor.

Since our launch in October 2021, we have focused on building the systems that would facilitate game-play, provide on-chain rewards, and function seamlessly. We have a vibrant Discord community where we have been facilitating a pre-alpha version of the game for over 130 days.

By translating our first deck into other languages, we believe Duo can open the door to new players and introduce them to Cardano in emerging blockchain markets. By taking NFTs into a global ecosystem, we can build a more vibrant play-to-earn gaming community on Cardano.

This proposal sits close to the heart of the CTO of Duo and Revelar, Benjamin, himself a native of South Africa and a native speaker of Afrikaans. This also gives a unique opportunity for Duo to leverage the background of one of its founders to grow the Cardano foothold in Africa.

By porting game content across linguistic and cultural boundaries, more gamers from around the world are given access to a global community in a way that is more familiar to them. Previously alienated communities can now enter into the ecosystem and themselves extract value.

Humor is a universal concept but it is heavily influenced by our language and cultural experiences. By porting game content to different languages and adding in culturally relevant humor, Duo can create a truly global user base whilst accelerating the adoption of crypto for all.

Our world today is full of risks, especially with the unknown nature of our global economy & workforce. The largest challenges for our goal of adding in outside developer teams to build NFT Games with Revelar on Cardano are the following:

  • Lost in translation: To facilitate the porting and creation of content in different languages, we need to partner with native speakers and people who understand the culture. These partners will be responsible for creating content appropriate to their language, however, as non-native speakers, it would be difficult for us to ensure that the translated content is correct and appropriate. We aim to mitigate this by partnering with multiple entities/people capable of delivering content, whilst cross-validating previously created content. This risk is also further mitigated as Benjamin, the CTO of Duo, is himself a native Afrikaans speaker and a South African
  • Cultural translation - Some of the current humor archetypes within the Duo humor archetypes are funny in English, however, they may not be funny in other cultures or languages because they are not compatible with the culturally accepted humor. We aim to mitigate this risk by using more than one translator who can provide linguistic and contextual translation, and by leveraging the abilites of our co-founder, a native Afrirkaans speaker.
  • Remote collaboration risks - The proposal will most certainly result in a global collaborative effort with parties working remotely. As such standard remote working risks also apply. This can be managed by limiting the need for synchronous communication with clear planning ahead of time for what needs to be done and by when
  • Product fit: Translating content into another language does not guarantee the adoption of that content by the intended audience. There is a chance that the game of Duo may not resonate with the intended audience as expected. To mitigate this we are keeping the game-play of Duo simple and we will also

Benjamin Beer – CTO Ben’s formal education is in Computer and Electronic Engineering with a focus on both hardware and software-based programming and system design. His Master's degree specialty focus is on the creation of decision support systems. He was on the NWU Solar Car racing team in South Africa as an engineer to create a web-based Race Strategy Optimization System that provides near real-time feedback in a race scenario by collating and processing large amounts of telemetric data. Success in this project would be the successful completion of translated content as well as the engagement with a local community during and post-marketing. Our metrics for success are, therefore:

The proposer has submitted a similar translation-related proposal in another challenge and based on my past experience as an assessor of tenders for a university, this aligns just as well if not more so than the other proposal since it's in Afrikaans and one of the proposer's is from South African which means there are great chance for completion of the project. One can wrongly question its belonging to the Grow Africa, Grow Cardano challenge because Duo is an NFT game & should be in the On-Chain Gaming challenge but I would argue that what's being presented is not the game itself but the content of the game which is currently in English and not aligned with the local language. Whilst English is one of the commonly spoken-languages in South Africa, the proposal indicates there are nuances in the current content which aren't easily translatable and their goal is to make it more meaningfully relevant to the local population by introducing culturally-relevant content. This makes it more than just an NFT game to the population because if it's 'speaks their language' in a manner of speaking, i.e. if the content is very South African in its delivery then it would be warmly adopted as 'their own'. To anyone who has travelled, met anyone from another country, or if you tell a local a joke that's very endemic to a local's own culture, then you would get the nuance and the importance of being relevant to the people. The impact is different. This proposal is on the right track to increase adoption of Cardano in South Africa if given a chance so I wish them good luck

The problem identified is reasonable and clear, the creation of games in English ends up limiting an audience that is not fluent in the language, so the solution of translating the game content solves the mentioned problem.

This proposal meets the key metrics indicated in the challenge setting, the creation of a translated version with local context adaptation would bring a new audience to Cardano and increase the use of blockchain by the African gaming community

Metrics/KPIs were defined to measure the number of players over 3, 6 and 12 months, this indicates a relevant impact on the challenge.

This proposal has an almost identical alternative version, only focused on translation into the African language, there are no relevant changes in the plan between the two, they were just adapted to suit the challenges in which they were placed.

The proposal is about translating a play-to-win-style card game, in which each card is an NFT minted on the Cardano blockchain. The problem contextualized by the proponents is that this type of game is very widespread in English, so populations that do not speak the native language are a little excluded and without so many means to expand the practice. Therefore, translate the game into the Afrikaans language, in order to better reach the Afrikaans-speaking audience. I agree that it's a good way to expand this type of project to new audiences, what I'm missing here is more detail about the game itself. We know that the reveal group already has projects in progress at Cardano and they are reliable, but the short video posted was not enough for me to have a complete understanding of the game, the matches, the rewards, etc. Therefore, I cannot say that the impact will be maximum. Details are lacking, but it's certainly a good idea.

I do enjoy the idea of creating an accessible game which considers the cultural and linguistics difference. Having it only in English really creates some boundaries to several people across the world. There are several games/movies which does not consider this bit and all the humor around it is lost. Therefore, I agree that this idea has the potential to grow towards the aimed community. Since the proposal states that it’s mandatory making partnerships with people from that country/culture, it fits perfectly the challenge accounting the local impact and partnership formed. Arranging partnership with people from different countries of Africa will grow the awareness and curiosity towards the ADA community. A point that should be added, however, is the explanation about the game itself. To verify its impact would be great to know how it works. It would help us to know if it would stick.

This is another proposal by the NFT game engine company Revelar, which has been working on Cardano projects with Catalyst funding since Fund6. In this case, they ask for funds in order to extend their alpha NFT game DUO (which is similar to Cards Against Humanity) to the South African community, by translating it. It seems to me like this proposal would be more of a fit to the Gamers On-Chained challenge than the Grow Africa, Grow Cardano one, but I don’t think that’s too important, because the requested amount is very small (4750 USD) and if successful, this proposal will have a beneficial impact on Africa as well. The proposers argue that by extending their game to African communities, they will encourage them to interact with Cardano and thus have more of them get involved with our ecosystem over time. As risks, 4 items have been identified, along with ways to mitigate them, once again showcasing the fact that Revelar plans out their projects in a very detailed manner. To sum up, I think this proposal effectively addresses the challenge. Score: 5.

DUO is an NFT card game developed by revelar, focused on user-owned cards, p2e aiming to expand their game in different languages. As the challenge goal is to expand cardano/blockchain related information in Africa, I believe that it can be done via games as well. The only disadvantage is the price and the limit of the collection. Right now, you can find some cards on jpg.store but I do not consider them lucrative enough to make any traction (1 black card for 250 ada, and few colored cards)…so I do not really see, how Africans would actually be able to play the game, if they would not be able to buy it. (too expensive/nothing on the market), or if a new collection is made, how to actually ensure that it will be exclusive to Africans, and it will not be abused by speculative actors.

On the outset it’s a small and simple proposal for a small and simple use case. But it’s one of the initial steps towards hugely potential multilanguage NFT gaming. As an NFT Game Engine built on Cardano, Revelar is set to success in the play-to-earn sphere. As an avid tabletop gamer this reminds me of games like Cards Against Humanity that have built almost cult-like following globally. The only minus comes from the blunder that instead of stating the summary of a solution, they’ve repeated the problem they have identified: Focus on natively English-speaking cultures is limiting the formation of a truly global NFT-based gaming community. Nevertheless, potential in building an engaged, global, Cardano-powered gaming community is huge. Besides these kinds of simple games have the potential to attract a lot of new users to the Cardano community.

I like the proposal's idea of bringing NFT games closer to non-English speakers who are interested in NFT games but lack the skills to fully understand them. Duo has been on the market for a while and has attracted the interest of the community, therefore I feel that supporting the game in additional languages would broaden its appeal to a broader variety of gamers. The strategy might result in a larger Cardano gaming community in the future.

The team described experiences relevant to the development of the project, two team members participated in Plutus Pioneer Program. A translator will be hired to do the translation.

The Revelar team was previously funded on Catalyst and has been developing the Duo game for a few months, at the moment the game is in pre alpha, but it is already possible to see updates on the YouTube channel and on Discord.

There is a budget breakdown, but not enough details. It would be important to have an estimate of the amount of material to be translated to understand the requested budget, amount of hours for development/integration of the translation in the application and more details about the marketing plan. Without these details it is not possible to say whether the budget requested for each part is reasonable.

The proposal presents a realistic timeline for the development of the mentioned steps and deliverables.

The Revelar team considered several realistic risks for the development of the project and proposed adequate solutions to mitigate them.

The Duo team are clearly presented on the proposal with their qualifications and links to validate their claims. Where this proposal receives my strongest agreement in terms of Feasibility is that one of their own is also South African so would be attuned to the local customs that is critical to their translation, as described. The proposers do not intend to merely translate the released NFT game from English but to also align it with the country's culture. This is a significant aspect for its success as it heightens the relevance of the game. The plan presented is what you would expect from a translation project and the timelines look doable.

Overall, the proposal is quite feasible, but I would like to suggest some improvements. Regarding the script, I have no criticisms to make, because I think it is well suited. We know what will be done, when and how. The level of detail is satisfactory and the time division is very specific, in weeks. The budget explanation part is just ok because some things should be explained better, such as what the marketing campaign would look like. How will Afrikaan speakers find out about the existence of this game and get involved with it? How would the routine of translations cost around 1800 dollars? What would local content creation be? Finally, analyzing the team, I thought that this great part, like the script, we have a great degree of detail about who the professionals involved are and it is important that they are people well involved with our blockchain. Therefore, I think that only the budget part deserved a little improvement.

It seems that the team is capable, being very active through the ADA funds. Besides that, having the CTO from South Africa and being an Afrikaans native speaker is amazing. I’ve seen that you’ve submitted the same proposals in other languages, therefore I suppose that this one is just to translate in Afrikaans. Since the CTO is a native speaker and he is from S.A., I think the ‘finding the partner/translator’ part won’t be a problem and would not exist. However, it must make a partnership with a totally stranger to not have any bias. About the translation, it should be taken into account that it’s not enough having someone translating to some language. It has to account to the differences between countries as well (Portugal and Brazil, e.g.). One point that should have been better explored is the game itself. The budget for the translation is $1850, however I’ve no idea if this is too much or too little since I’ve no idea how the game works (how many cards, words, content, knowledge required, etc.). More than that, if we don’t know the content, we don’t know if we would like to play it or not or if it would be another game that people start to play only to earn something and then disappear Another point is that you state that is a play-to-earn game, however it not explains how it will work, therefore I have no condition to know if it’s sustainable or not. These are very serious points that should’ve been more explored. Adding these information would enhance the overall quality of the proposal. Another point is the scalability. It would be nice to have the expected monetization and the project to start growing in other languages not needing to be funded.

We are provided with a very simple timeline, the bottom line being that in about 12 weeks after funding is started, the translation should be complete as well as the updates to the game for it to be playable by the Afrikaans speakers. The budget is broken down into several separate items and seems very reasonable, as I said above, at only 4750 USD. For this amount, the return will easily be higher than the investment in my opinion, if the proposal is successful and the game takes off. Regarding the team, we are provided with descriptions and social links for the company’s CEO, CTO and CCO. They have mentioned in the proposal that they will have to find translators and hire them, but with the CTO being South African, this will not be a problem. I believe that this proposal is likely to be implemented successfully. Score: 5.

The revelar team is already having a working product, the only difference is to translate it. Along with the fact, that one of their members is sout africans, and the only task will be to hire a translator, there is no actually a hard-skill required.

The team revelar is composed of three team memebers, where we have a relevant experienced stated along with linked in profiles. Also, on their website and discord, we can find some videos, which are meeting the quality requirements of "today".

The roadmap is set to 10-12 weeks, and the longest parts are focused on translation, or marketing. Overall the roadmap is set reasonably, and feasibile.

The total budget asked is 4750 USD, and as per roadmap, the most funded tasks are the longest - 1 850 for translation services and 1 900 for marketing.

The proposal includes a thorough strategy with a timetable for each phase. Money spent on each task is also clearly indicated. The proposal also clearly shows facts, the personal background of each key team member, and their LinkedIn profiles. Furthermore, the proposer has outlined a few potential issues as well as solutions to deal with them. Given that the CTO is also a native Afrikaans speaker and a South African, I feel the translation work will be simple.

However, I believe that additional information regarding marketing approach should be provided in order to better analyze the planned marketing expenditure.

Overall, I believe the project is still feasible.

Out of their 14 proposals in Fund8, half deal with Duo - their flagship game - and five are specifically targeted for translation (https://www.getduo.gg/). The languages they are going for are Spanish, Afrikaans, German, Filipino and Portuguese. Each of these are asking for the same amount of $4,750 USD. Considering how well the proposal is laid out, it’s a reasonable ask. The team is both passionate and skilled. Plus they have an Afrikaans speaker in the core team, a fact that solidifies this proposal. Five of their proposals were funded in Fund7.

There is clarity in the problem, the solution described in this proposal and how they relate to the challenge.

The proposal contains a simple but objective roadmap appropriate to the complexity of the proposal. There are milestones that can help with the audit.

Metrics were included to evaluate success and there are appropriate KPIs, which is positive for evaluating the performance and evolution of the proposal. My only recommendation would be to include more metrics/KPIs that allow you to evaluate items other than the number of users, such as number of transactions, number of NFTs purchased or transacted by users.

The team created a page where it is possible to follow the development of all proposals related to Catalyst and committed to adding updates related to the development of the proposal.

Aside from the youtube channel and the discord mentioned in the video, the team also offers their catalyst-related website where progress of the translation would be provided. A check of this website shows their past development of the Duo NFT P2E game is also published in the same url. This points to a highly reliable and trustworthy resource and thereby receives my strong agreement of the project's auditability. The team has also proposed KPIs post translation which seems to err on the conservative side, though I am not so familiar with South African participation in NFT P2E gaming as I am of their other proposal (Filipino translation). That said, I am hopeful this number will be surpassed and sets Cardano up for increased adoption in South Africa via the Duo NFT game. Good luck.

Auditability is not as good as other topics. Talking about the process, the group has a website that can serve as a way for us to notice updates from the project's development, but we don't know what would be posted or how often. I also didn't find the site's interface so ergonomic, I would like it to be more intuitive for the user. The same observations I make about Duo Translation - I don't know how often or in what way the feedbacks would be made available, nor how the Cardano community would keep abreast of the news. Regarding the final result, it is known what is expected for this project itself, but it is not studied how the reflection for Cardano would be measured. I would like the proponents to be concerned with qualitative and quantitative data that explain what this translation generated for Cardano in the chosen location. So, overall, I think this topic deserved a little more attention and depth.

The revelar is having website, where they can check the progress history and modifications, which is perfectly suitable for auditing.

Also, there is a discord, which can be checked for activity of players.

The success of the proposal is defined as a number of new players - 100 / 3 months, 250 / 6m onths and +500 for 9-12 months. It is important to state, that these "new" players are counted from the target group Africans, to meet the goal of the challenge. What is somehow missing, is how they actually plan to verify whether these players are africans.

Since the idea is to create page which would allow everyone to verify its updates, it`s quite auditable. The metrics are nice as well. I would like to see some KPIs such as #download per language – which would allow you to verify which language/country had the best adoption (following this result with a feedback is important to better know the cultural nuances and to audit the translator’s work). A clearer roadmap with some milestones would be great as well. The time spent with each activity is nice but having this alone is not as good as having it with some dates and milestones such as (2 weeks starting from XXX and ending XXX – having this result Y in the XXX).

For the Auditability section, we are provided with Revelar’s website (https://catalyst.revelar.co), where they post regular updates on all their Catalyst proposals. We do not have KPI’s listed, although I feel that is somewhat understandable, since this will really not be too much work once the translators start, but perhaps it could have been mentioned here that a public update for the proposal would be updated on the site at key intervals (translator hired - translation work has begun - translation work has ended - game has been updated etc). Revelar has stated that they will consider this project a success if it is delivered on time and if after 3 months there are at least 100 new Afrikaans DUO players, with this scaling up to 1000 after a year. I believe that with the information Revelar regularly updates on their site and with these success metrics, the progress and success of the proposal will be easy to verify. Score: 5.

When it comes to reporting and tracking results, Revelar is setting an example for others to follow. They have an entire GitBook section dedicated for sharing progress reports for the Catalyst community (https://catalyst.revelar.co/). Their approach is so clear and convincing that it’s a pity I don’t have time to stay and play. :)
