WHO WE ARE

What began as a challenge has become a community: Cardano4Climate

We are a community following the examples of the Project Catalyst Swarm & WADA; building on the principles of engagement, reliability, & sustainability.

WHAT WE DO

In the past 6 months, we have grown a community around communication channels & a shared vision. Emerging from our social media channels, weekly meetings, monthly events (with a growing list of domain experts), website, YouTube channel, & outreach both inside & outside of Catalyst is

a community hub of

  • Support for the collaborative development of well-defined proposals through feedback, knowledge, & resource sharing related to climate change issues & mitigation, as well as the processes defined by Catalyst
  • Moderated discussions to empower individuals to engage & take action.
  • Connections to experts & teams within the Cardano & Catalyst Community: WADA, Swarm, Catalyst School, Climate Neutral Cardano SPOs, the Cardano Foundation & the IOG Impact team.

a resource base for

  • Data & information related to Climate Change & SDGs,
  • Referrals to relevant sources of information, trusted experts, & assistance
  • Promotion of Catalyst & Cardano activities (with domain experts previously outside of Cardano)
  • Climate-related proposals in Catalyst
  • Projects (on & off-chain) needing & giving support
  • Documents tracking our activity to duplicate processes and to build trust through transparency

an online, global meeting place & time to

  • Connect, collaborate, contribute, listen, learn, absorb & recharge.
  • Bridge outside communities affected by climate change to applications on the Cardano blockchain
  • Educate & promote sustainable solutions.
  • Explore ways to bridge knowledge gaps.
  • Offer continuous support & advice related to Project Catalyst processes.
  • Collaborate with other community hubs throughout Project Catalyst.

to reach the highest in human collaboration to address humanity's greatest challenge: Climate Change

The Global Problem

Climate change is a failure of cooperation

-Scott Poynton

Due to increasing activism and consumer consciousness, trillions of dollars are being pledged towards mitigating and reversing Climate change. Our current systems are inefficient. There exists a widespread lack of transparency, community trust & impact on a global scale. Solutions being proposed by world leadership are centralized & do not work for everyone. Where do communities in need turn?

A Scalable Solution

Two disruptions to our current situation on earth can not be ignored… Climate Change & Blockchain technology. One is a wicked problem; the other is positioned to become a major contributor to the solutions. The Cardano blockchain is sustainable while facilitating the worldwide scalability, transparency & traceability essential for the effective allocation of resources. These capabilities increase the trust needed to motivate off-chain communities to choose Cardano, the blockchain network best positioned to facilitate solutions for those concerned about carbon footprints.

Cardano4Climate realizes an opportunity for Cardano to combine new blockchain models with ground-up, community-driven challenges and solutions arising from climate change. Cardano gives power to all. Through Catalyst, we have access to an ecosystem of aligned individuals, as well as the conditions necessary for the creation of regenerative systems to heal us and our environment.

Detailed Problem Description:

A community-driven project like Catalyst needs community-organized events & meetings to connect ideas & initiatives, discuss & solve problems, & initiate collaboration. Without moderation, facilitation, coordination, & an action plan, energy & time are consumed by discussions without reaching a conclusion or direction for implementation.

Current & Proposed Solution:

The Cardano4Climate HUB is motivated by the language of the heart: purpose. The citizens of this culture are localized to the environment & systems in which they live while being aware of the global impact of Climate Change. It is both the problems creating Climate Change & the ground-up solutions to mitigate it, that have drawn us together into a global community of many tongues, heads, hearts, & hands that reach into every corner of the globe. Cardano4Climate opens a space to speak our heart languages & gives a collective voice to this purpose through our social media channels, meetings, and event.

Target demographic:

The Catalyst community, individuals representing funded proposals and those applying for funding, non-government organizations & communities outside the Cardano network affected by &/or working to mitigate climate change.

While the problems are global the people's activities are local. Cardano4Climate is a global community composed of local hubs & activities and supporting local communities.

The 'F8: Scale-UP Cardano's Community Hubs' challenge asks, "How do we encourage Local Community Hubs to drive adoption and awareness of Cardano in 2022?" By providing the time & space for connecting individuals & teams, forwarding important announcements, collaborating with other Hubs, moderating various discussions on our Discord server & Telegram channel, hosting meetings, and organizing events, Cardano4Climate has been directly addressing this challenge for six months now.

Why is it important? Without users on the ground level, we are building niche products serving mostly technical people with blockchain expertise.

Cardano4Climate growing members are around the world. Many if not all are active in local activities towards climate change be it related to green energy, agriculture, forest conservation, and more. There are obviously members with technical expertise but they also have “boots on the ground” with their local community. While Cardano4Climate gives the framework and global place to come together. Each member then takes it to his local community and serves as a Cardano impact & climate hub.

What does success look like? Local Community Hubs across the world where the average person can take part in their own language and with their own cultural understanding

Cardano4climate community brings local people working on local climate-related problems into coordinated efforts with a common purpose of working out together how Cardano and blockchain could support their work.

We are aiming to become self-sustaining and evaluate a few income models such as recognition fees from funded proposers, launching our own mission-driven stake pool, as well introducing an impact climate token. Those solutions will be evaluated in the next 3 months.

The key challenge we have today is to manage the growth of the community and support the local community hubs. In Addition, climate change deals with many areas (agriculture, energy, finance, education, cycle economy…) and there are many opportunities to use blockchain as a key part of the solution. The challenge is therefore to dedicate the resources to be able to support our activities.

To mitigate it we are empowering community members to get involved and lead certain areas. C4C education is one example and regenerative agriculture is another. We manage regular weekly team meetings and community meetups to continually improve our community services. As a minimum, we have 4 weekly meetings each month.

Key Metrics to measure

  • How many new Hubs were launched in 2022?

Cardano4Climate will use the resources to support its members to grow their local Cardano4Climate hubs around the world and bring more local people into Cardano.

  • How many developers did this community-focused challenge bring into the Cardano ecosystem?

Purpose-driven developers are part of the solution and find in Cardano4Climate a place to interact and collaborate with climate-related activities. Collaborating with AIM and Gimballabs is one example as well as individual purpose-driven tech people.

  • How many new users of Cardano were onboarded?

In 6 months, Cardano4Climate grow from 0 to over 200 members. We expect it to continue and grow and at least grow 2x with the scope of this proposal

  • What was the total reach of the Hub's initial marketing launch?

It is an ongoing effort to onboard more people from around the world and provide them the platform and the tools to bring it to their local communities

  • How many external organizations did this community-focused challenge bring into the Cardano ecosystem?

This is an important part of the network collaborating with multiple external organizations and bringing them to Cardano. Some examples include: IMpact accelerators (seedstars.com), impact networks (Goodwall.io), Impact organizations (NGOs - i.e. thepondfoundation.org)

Budget

  • Weekly event planning (including core team meeting a day before), hosting, post hosting admin (followup, recording…) $250 x 12 events (3 months) = $3000
  • Social channels management $1000 per month for 3 months = $3000
  • Local members & hubs support and coordination $1000 per month for 3 months = $3000
  • Subscriptions & web hosting and other expenses: $350/month x 3 = $1050
  • Marketing and PR (i.e. sign in to other community platforms) $2000

Total budget $12050

We are aiming to become self-sustaining and evaluate a few income models such as recognition fees from funded proposers, launching our own mission-driven stake pool, as well introducing an impact climate token. Those solutions will be evaluated in the next 3 months.

Cardano4Climate is the central hub for impact and purpose driven members of Project Catalyst. In addition to weekly general membership meetings, core team and working group meetings, we want to highlight several partnerships developing in the past month.

C4C is working with Gimbalabs to build adoption of a native token, the Gimbal, and to build educational, project-based-learning material in support of hub activities.

Ikigai is a concept to refine and align the purpose of an individual or group. This concept is championed by the Littlefish Foundation and is being adopted by C4C. It's a way to encourage meaningful and effective participation within the hub and beyond.

OpenLitterMap and LitterCoin, regardless of being skipped over for funding in fund8, continue to represent Cardano, Project Catalyst and Cardano in many channels. For instance, OpenLitterMap was included in a registry of digital public good by a multi-stakeholder consortium endorsed by the UN Secretary General.

We continue to host one community event per week, and at least three other core team working sessions during the week to keep our various projects and communities on-track. On Mondays we do event planning, on Tuesdays we have a working session, on Wednesdays we host our weekly community meet up, and on Friday we have.a working session on tokenomics, bounties, and financial accounting. These meetings, our Discord server, and Telegram channels (4 active ones!) keep us organized.

This past month, the big project was ImpactFest. This was a community event to bring awareness to all the wonderful Impact-related proposals in Catalyst Fund 9 and give the proposers a chance to present their ideas, connect with one another, and answer questions for the community. This event happened across one big event on August 11, and across multiple regional Town Halls and other venues.

We have continued to run an operational community hub helping provide support to the environmental, and social project looking to build around Cardano, or become apart of the ecosystem.

Our community hub has also put one the very first Impact Fest for fund 9 where we helped Project Catalyst Teams share their projects and upcoming proposals for voting. We provided a place for the community to come share and support one another. We also collaborated with many community groups and different weekly town hall to provide further mini impact fests for any project who couldnt make out first meeting!
