Solution
Bringing an incentive model for various stakeholders & utilizing the carbon credits generated by these trees for off-setting can create an impact project that will help stakeholders monetize.
Problem
Polluting industries grow and earn, while environmentalists and people who volunteer for such work get nothing in return. The climate is changing, but why aren’t we? How can we become action takers?

[IMPACT] Please describe your proposed solution.

We have a responsibility towards the planet we live on. With Global awareness slowly spreading about Climate emergencies, individuals, groups, and even organizations are working towards a greener world.

Konma initiated a program called Harithakanthi on 1st January 2020 in association with TREES Trust, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Airforce. Harithakanthi is a tree plantation drive conducted across various places in South India. The program focuses on the following:

Tree plantations in dedicated green corridors of high-security zones like defence camp sites.

The plantation drives not only involve sapling plantation but maintenance as well. Our previous projects have a survival rate of 100% because we replace saplings that do not survive with new ones. This is one of the standout points in what we do.

We also focus on sapling development carried out by individuals, schools and colleges, where we introduce this concept to young minds. Each student or individual adopts a few saplings and grows them until they are ready to be planted.

STAKEHOLDERS:

Volunteers: We have around 1200 volunteers spread across south India who participate in sapling development, pre-plantation works, sapling plantation and plantation maintenance drives. Volunteers usually comprise NCC (National Cadet Corps) students, college students, individuals, and families.

Donors: The tree plantations are funded by individuals or organizations as their CSR programs.

INTENTIONS:

We intend to bring every tree planted onto the chain to ensure 100% survival and tracking of the trees while incentivizing the stakeholders with CNFTs for their involvement.

We have over 700,000 trees already planted since the inception that are now standing tall and offset carbon. We want to get these plantations audited as per the Kyoto Protocol and trade the generated carbon credits on the exchange.

We intend to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations across India for our plantations.

DETAILED PLAN:

Our first step is to arrive at a mathematical equation in relation to the Kyoto Protocol guidelines wherein we calculate the amount of CO2 absorbed by the trees and the amount of O2 produced by the same and arrive at a metric tonnage unit of the CO2 absorbed.

We then use this count per month or year to mint fungible $KCCP (Konma Carbon Credit Protocol) Tokens where 100 KCCP is equivalent to 1 metric ton of CO2 Absorbed. A decentralized oracle will be developed and deployed for this process to be automated.

Konma DAO will govern the protocol and its subsequent entities.

Companies, SPO, crypto mining farms, and other environmentally concerned parties can buy these tokens through a DEX and redeem them on our website.

When a redemption takes place, the amount of tokens is burnt, and a CNFT is produced to that company/organization's wallet, thanking them and proving the whole process of offsetting their carbon emissions.

A certificate containing the geo-location, age of the tree, species, and other relevant information is minted as a CNFT.

[IMPACT] Please describe how your proposed solution will address the Challenge that you have submitted it in.

There is no better community than the ones that come together for a cause. With this cause initiative, we intend to create awareness about climate emergencies and also the actions each individual can take by participating as a Cardano Stakeholder.

The tree plantation drive has already created a successful impact. By bringing our operations on-chain to ensure transparency and auditability, we can further our cause and significantly impact the Cardano adaption.

By leveraging blockchain technology to build an integrated planting management platform for our plantation drive, The system allows us to gather ground-level data and manage the plantation more effectively.

The system is designed specifically for the needs of large-scale reforestation for maximum impact.

[IMPACT] What are the main risks that could prevent you from delivering the project successfully and please explain how you will mitigate each risk?

  • The main challenge we face is to deploy Interoperability between Harithakanthi and the Konma Carbon Credit Protocol (KCCP) based on the Kyoto Protocol

  • Mass-adoption is also an immediate concern that can ensure reaching our goals sooner.

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed plan, including timeline and key milestones for delivering your proposal.

To build the system required to execute the "detailed plan" mentioned, we can divide the development phase into sprints that are 2 weeks each.

3 Month plan

  • Design: 1 Sprint

  • Development: 2-3 Sprints

  • Auditing: 1 Sprint

  • Marketing, Content Creation, Video Assets, Graphic Assets: 2 Sprints

  • TestNet and MainNet Deployment: run in parallel to the Marketing Phase.

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed budget breakdown.

Development of Smart-contract (80 Hrs)

  • Design - Wireframe, Figma, Web Flow, User Flow
  • Development - Code Based Development
  • Auditing - 3rd Party Auditing
  • Deployment

Oracle - Decentralized Oracle (80 Hrs)

Front-end - (40 Hrs)

  • UI-UX
  • Web 3 Integration

Back-end - (40 Hrs)

  • Oracle Integration
  • API requests
  • Embedded Database

Total: 240 Hrs at 75 USD/Hr = 18000 USD

This development is followed by:

Targeted Marketing (3 Months) 3000 USD

Events (3 Months) 3000 USD

Bringing the total Budget Required to 24000 USD

[FEASIBILITY] Please provide details of the people who will work on the project.

[FEASIBILITY] If you are funded, will you return to Catalyst in a later round for further funding? Please explain why / why not.

If funded and the project goes as planned, we will create a sustainable model and will not be requiring further funding.

[AUDITABILITY] Please describe what you will measure to track your project's progress, and how will you measure these?

The progress of the project can be followed by observing these key metrics:

  • Total No. of Trees planted
  • Metric tonnes of Carbon Offset
  • Total No of CNFTs given out
  • Total No of donations received for Plantation.

The project development will be executed along the DDAD approach where Design is followed by Development, Auditing & Deployment in that order.

[AUDITABILITY] What does success for this project look like?

Success for this project marks the completion of the blockchain solution being developed to record and assess:

  • Donations to plant trees

  • Trees to offset carbon emissions

  • Amount of Carbon offset made into fungible tokens

  • Companies buying these fungible tokens to offset their carbon output

  • CNFTs rewarded to stake-holders

[AUDITABILITY] Please provide information on whether this proposal is a continuation of a previously funded project in Catalyst or an entirely new one.

This proposal was initially put in Project Catalyst Fund 8 under Grow India Grow Cardano Challenge but was not funded.
