This proposal was approved and funded by the Cardano Community via Project F10: Developer Ecosystem - The Evolution Catalyst funding round.

[IMPACT] Please describe your proposed solution.

Paima Engine is a framework for building gamification and gaming use-cases for blockchains. It already comes with multiple templates such as board games, onchain ai, card games, rpg game and more that can be found here: <https://github.com/PaimaStudios/paima-game-templates>

We want to build even more templates, especially around gamification use-cases such as

  1. Point systems where users gain points for real-life actions (such as purchasing a drink)
  2. Traceability where the state of an object updates

As well as games and apps of different genre

We do not commit to any specific template as there is quite a lot to pick from, and we want to avoid committing to specific templates that others may have already built by the time Catalyst ends.

[IMPACT] How does your proposed solution address the challenge and what benefits will this bring to the Cardano ecosystem?

This benefits Cardano by having many open source templates that entrepreneurs can use to kickstart their business

[IMPACT] How do you intend to measure the success of your project?

  • Number of projects that launch using use-cases inspired by the templates

  • Traction of the Github repository for these templates (stars, watchers, etc.)

[IMPACT] Please describe your plans to share the outputs and results of your project?

All templates will be open-sourced under an MIT license on Github

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] What is your capability to deliver your project with high levels of trust and accountability?

dcSpark and Paima Studios are well renowned companies in the Cardano ecosystem that have a long history of delivering on Catalyst proposals. You can find progress on grants we have previously received at https://dcspark.io/grants

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] What are the main goals for the project and how will you validate if your approach is feasible?

Our team has written multiple templates before, so we our confident in our ability to continue this work

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed breakdown of your project’s milestones and each of the main tasks or activities to reach the milestone plus the expected timeline for the delivery.

  1. Template #1
  2. Template #2
  3. Template #3
  4. Template #4
  5. Template #5

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] Please describe the deliverables, outputs and intended outcomes of each milestone.

  1. Open-source code on Github
  2. Open-source code on Github
  3. Open-source code on Github
  4. Open-source code on Github
  5. Open-source code on Github

[RESOURCES & VALUE FOR MONEY] Please provide a detailed budget breakdown of the proposed work and resources.

  1. $20k
  2. $20k
  3. $20k
  4. $20k
  5. $20k

[RESOURCES & VALUE FOR MONEY] Who is in the project team and what are their roles?

- dcSpark (developers)

- Paima Studios (maintenance)

[RESOURCES & VALUE FOR MONEY] How does the cost of the project represent value for money for the Cardano ecosystem?

This represents value as the cost for each of these proposals is relatively low compared to the value of a single project building a business on top of these templates

This proposal is possible because the Paima Engine and Cardano blockchain are freely available platforms. In addition, the team implementing the proposal is Sebastien Guillemot, Nicolas Arqueros, Robert Kornacki, dcSpark and Paima Studios. They are a team of experienced and talented developers. They are active on Catalyst and the Cardano ecosystem. They need 450000 ada to make the proposal in 6 months.

The project team, with developers from dcSpark and maintenance experts from Paima Studios, seems ready to create the templates and provide ongoing support. They know Cardano well, which boosts the chances of successful execution. One more good point, The team's past experience in creating multiple templates shows they know how to do similar projects. This makes us believe they can continue this work and provide useful and easy-to-use templates for Cardano. Now another side of coin, the proposal doesn't provide a clear schedule for when each template will be finished. Without this, it's hard to know if the project can be completed on time or not. But again supporting the proposal as it has unique innovative idea in gaming sector. The project has some good things going for it, like the team's experience in creating templates and a budget that seems reasonable. These factors suggest that the project has a good chance of being successful.

As a developer and educator of the Cardano ecosystem, I find the information provided by the proposers quite scarce to be able to evaluate if the implementation of the proposal is feasible. As an evaluator of proposals in several rounds of Catalyst, I can safely say that in general, more and better quality information, better documentation, is required from the vast majority of proposers, of course, less recognized. However, innovation is not a legacy system. A level playing field must be offered to all participants.

Upon reviewing the proposal, I am confident in the feasibility of this project. The team's established track record with successful Catalyst proposals and their clear plan for execution inspire confidence in their ability to achieve the project's objectives. The budget and milestones appear to be well thought out and realistic, reflecting a practical approach to resource allocation and project management. The team's demonstrated skills and experience further reinforce their capability to deliver on the project's promises. To enhance the proposal, it would be beneficial to provide more comprehensive details about the templates that will be developed. A clear and thorough explanation of the templates' functionalities and how they will facilitate game and app development on Cardano will help potential stakeholders understand the project's true value. Additionally, outlining a well-defined strategy for measuring success would add credibility to the proposal. By clearly stating how the team intends to assess the adoption and utilization of the templates, the project's impact on the Cardano ecosystem can be effectively demonstrated. In conclusion, I recommend funding this valuable addition to Cardano. With a strong team, a practical plan, and potential for growth within the ecosystem, this project holds great promise in fostering innovation and advancing Cardano's position in the blockchain landscape. Addressing the specific areas mentioned would further strengthen the proposal and increase its chances of success.

The team came out with two metrics to measure the success of the project; 1) Number of projects that launch using use-cases inspired by the templates and 2) Traction of the Github repository for these templates (stars, watchers, etc.). In additional, the team will be having all the codes and templates open sourced. The Cardano community can use these metrics and the open sourced materials to assess the progress of the team’s project. The team is also confident that this proposal is feasible because they had written many templates before for the Cardano community and developers. Furthermore, Paima will be supporting them for the maintenance of the templates. I believe with the strong and continuous contribution from the team, dC Spark, they are able to deliver this project.

Based on the website and stated promises it could be feasible but the author doesn't display almost any evidence in this proposal. They only share a webpage and github and write that they have already been funded. The GitHub link shows the roadmap and plan but in this proposal, there is really almost nothing so the deliverables are questionable. I would appreciate elaborating here on the milestones more.

dcSpark have a nice track record and are known for their very useful mobile application Flint. However, there is - as far as I'm aware of and judging from the proposal - no track record in delivering these so-called "templates" for gamification and others.

They don't show any of their timeline and goals for each phase of the project. They should write more about them, it will be easy for CR to check. They should provide more information in their proposal. They don’t give their detailed budget breakdown too. All information I see is they want to create 5 templates and they need $20K/template. It’s so high and not good for the Cardano’s treasury. They have to show more information or should create something like Google Sheets that will contain their detailed budget breakdown, it’ll be convenient for CR to track. The project has 4 members: Nicolas Arqueros, Robert Kornacki, dcSpark, and Paima Studios. They don’t give any information about them. I can’t check their skill and experience and which role they are in.

Furthermore, the team has also done well by providing details breakdown of their project milestone of their project task activities and intended outcome of each milestone, that is , 1 template for open source code on GitHub etc which I believe they would do a great job if they are granted fund's to execute their project. Moreover, the proposal team has done a great job by indicating they main goal for the project on how it will validate should they be funded, that is, by is using their ability to continue the work since the team wrote multiple template before I believe is COMMANDEBLE should they be granted fund's to execute their project.

There is no doubt that the team in this proposal is highly reliable and experienced, even though Paima Studios can be considered a relatively new company. There are no future plans mentioned because the template project is already completed and ready for use, with available documentation on GitHub or on their web for developers. It might be even better if they could share the journey of this project, such as the challenges they faced during development and the duration of the project.

well yeah overall, the team's capabilities and the completed project templates showcase their commitment and expertise, making them a valuable addition to the Cardano ecosystem. Sharing their journey would provide additional insights and transparency, further enhancing their credibility in the community.

Is the funding amount requested for this project reasonable and does it provide good Value for Money to the Treasury?

Commenter gravatar

This proposal brings a great contribution to the field of building games and apps on the Cardano ecosystem. This proposal needs to be facilitated to make it a reality. All output from the project will be updated on Github and 5 templates will be implemented in this proposal. Each template will cost about $20,000 to complete.

For this section I have some concern to be raised. The proposal doesn't explain how the money will be spent on each template. Without this information, we can't tell if the requested amount is suitable for the project's goals. More, the $20k budget allocated for each template may not be the best way to spend the funds. Some templates may need more resources than others, and it's essential to consider the varying needs and complexities of each template. The proposal lacks information about the specific roles and expertise of dcSpark and Paima Studios. It's essential to know more about their skills and capacity to create valuable templates for the project. Wrapping up with one concern, the proposal doesn't provide enough information about how the budget will be used and why it's justified. This raises concerns about whether the project will provide good value for money to the Cardano ecosystem.

By not providing sufficient information in the Feasibility section, it is difficult to establish whether the money to be provided for the implementation of this proposal is reasonable. In addition, there are considerations noted in the Impact section regarding the sufficiency of funds already received by the proposers in previous Catalyst rounds for the implementation of this and other proposals submitted in the current round. Given those considerations, the treasury's Value For Money does not appear to be reasonable.

The proposed funding for this project is reasonable and offers significant value to the Cardano Treasury. The estimated cost of $20k per template is relatively low compared to the potential business value it can generate. The team, comprising dcSpark and Paima Studios, has an established track record of success with Catalyst proposals and possesses the necessary skills and experience to execute the project effectively. The project is well-aligned with the increasing demand for templates that enable the development of games and apps on the Cardano platform. By providing these templates, the project can contribute to the ecosystem's growth and attract more developers and businesses to the Cardano blockchain. Funding this project represents a prudent investment, given the team's capabilities and the potential impact on the Cardano ecosystem. To further strengthen the proposal, additional details about the templates' functionalities and potential use cases would be valuable. Additionally, outlining a clear strategy for measuring success will provide stakeholders with a better understanding of the project's impact and effectiveness. Overall, I am confident that the team can address these points, and I recommend funding this valuable addition to Cardano. With the right support and resources, this project has the potential to advance Cardano's position as a leading platform for innovative and engaging applications.

The team have given their timeline with their milestone and budget breakdown. Lets start of with the timeline. They require 6 months period to complete this project. From their proposal, the team intends to write 5 dev gaming templates to github. In my opinion, their milestone could have more details like what kind of templates they are targeting to write up. In regards to the amount of money they requested, it is quite a lot In my opinion. $20,000 per template over 6 months period. They claimed that this proposal fund request is relatively low compared to other proposals. There is not enough evidence to justify this as they did not provide proper breakdown how they will spend the money. It is very general to say the least. This is why the score for this section Value for Money I give is 3. They could have breakdown where the money is allocated, how much portion to dC Spark and Paima Studios, what gaming templates they going to write up and justify its $20,000 for each template.

The value for money and the funding amount they request are reasonable. There are trusted proposers on Catalyst that share all the links, they are trusted members of the community and skilled developers but they also write everything here and if I rate their proposal with 5 stars I can't be unfair and do the same here.

I propose some metrics for this project are the number of developers in the Cardano who like their templates, and the developers’ feedback after using templates. The project is new and hasn’t happened in the funds before. Once again, I hope they should complete their proposal before they start this project, it’s good for them, the community of Cardano too.

he proposal could benefit from providing more detailed information about the funding allocation. While it mentions dividing the cost of each template by 20k, it would be helpful to specify how much will be allocated for developers' compensation and how much for future template maintenance or etc. This level of transparency would enable the community to assess whether the funding is reasonable and sustainable.

Conducting a bug bounty reward could be a valuable step to ensure the long-term usefulness and stability of the project. Bug bounties encourage participation and engagement, which can lead to improvements and help identify potential issues early on, especially in the Cardano ecosystem.

Overall, by providing more comprehensive funding details and conducting bug bounty programs, the proposal can demonstrate a more robust and well-thought-out approach to project sustainability and community engagement. This would enhance the overall credibility and attractiveness of the proposal in the eyes of the Cardano ecosystem.

This proposal will provide multiple templates to help builders write apps and games for the Cardano ecosystem easier and faster. This proposal have quite interesting facts that can be noticed around the world of gaming sector. Paima Engine makes it easy for anyone to create fun and interactive games on Cardano. They provide free tools and templates, so even developers with limited resources can make engaging applications. It's like giving everyone the power to build exciting games. Its absolutely 'wow things' to observe. But as conern point of view, if the framework doesn't have set templates, different developers might end up creating the same templates without realizing it. This could waste their time and resources and cause inefficiencies. Let it be… the framework includes ready-made templates for point systems and traceability, making it useful for more than just games. It can be used in many industries like loyalty programs, tracking products in supply chains, and creating decentralized apps. This makes Cardano even more versatile and helpful for different businesses and projects. And as proposal is promsing to complete development process within 6 months, it can possible, beacuse there is a provision of ready-to-use templates reduces the barrier for developers to enter the gaming and gamification space on Cardano. Supporting the proposal yaah !

Undoubtedly, the area of games and everything connected to it (gamification, etc.), is an important gateway to any ecosystem. The creation of systems that can become replicable instances is one of the equally important characteristics to make the experience of developers and creators of products and services something with the minimum of friction. Therefore, there is no doubt that the proposal, despite offering very few details, makes sense. Besides, "we are talking about dcSpark". However, we must not confuse impact on the ecosystem with the responsibility that must be assumed to generate that impact. Fortunately, there is no shortage of innovators and creators in the world who bring to life the innovations and meaningful work we need. So at this point it is timely to ask whether an organization that has received significant sums of money from Catalyst (including a $400,000 USD loan in Fund 9: a loan, of course, but without collateral in case the company does not survive within the two-year time frame given to repay the debt), should continue to request money for its operations. The impact on an ecosystem should not be sought at the expense of the moral responsibility that innovators bear. The work outlined in this proposal, valued at $135,000 USD, is to what extent covered by Catalyst funds received in previous rounds? Are we talking here about an impact opportunity for the ecosystem, or about operating expenses and a market opportunity for dcSpark? Given that Intersect (https://www.intersectmbo.org/), Cardano's member-based organization has already been launched and will soon be operational, wouldn't it be more convenient for dcSpark to operate for the time being with the funds already raised from Catalyst and wait for Intersect to become operational to cover its funding needs? Aren't its funding needs covered for the time being, and is it time for them to begin delivering results on proposals such as these without waiting for new funding? At this point, the relationship between dcSpark and Catalyst reminds me of the famous Wall Street "too big to fail" situations where there is a moral responsibility to be assumed. In short, and as IOG's president made it clear during one of her interventions at the final CIP 1694 Governance workshop in Edinburgh when people wanted to look for similarities between Catalyst as an innovation engine and Cardano's blockchain governance actions, Catalyst is the only place in the ecosystem to risk funds on innovation. By all accounts, dcSpark has reached the end of its cycle as a venture fund recipient. It is now in good shape to be an outstanding member of Intersect as a contractor. Side note: I've been in the ecosystem for years, and I only hear from them when Catalyst funding opens. Their participation in the community is non-existent. When Catalyst funding is received on such a massive scale, fostering the growth of the community becomes a moral obligation.

The idea of this proposal matches the requirement of the challenge. The team intends to build templates on writing apps for games on the Cardano blockchain. It is good for gaming developers to have a template they can refer to and build their game or NFT game. The problem statement mentioning that there is lack of templates for developers who joins and wants to build on Cardano. I think this is very good as gaming will be very massive in the future and especially when using blockchains like Cardano for onchain activities including utilizing NFTs. This is also an amazing start to ease up new developers who wants to build in Cardano. Any developers around the world can refer to the templates produced by the team (dC Spark), which contributes to bringing in more users and adoption in the Cardano ecosystem.

The problem they give out is a lack of template support for writing apps and games for the Cardano ecosystems. The problem is suitable for the challenge. The solution is they will write templates for various games & gamification to help builders making it not only more likely that they build their project but also making it easier, faster, and in the Cardano ecosystem. This proposal can expand and spread in the future because the Cardano ecosystem needs some applications and templates like that which will support more developers in Cardano and Cardano’s technology. Paima Engine is a framework for building gamification and gaming use cases for blockchains. We can track this software’s code via GitHub: https://github.com/PaimaStudios/paima-game-templates. I believe if the project is applied to the Cardano ecosystem. Developers and builders will be easier to build games and applications on the Cardano. I check out their code, it’s ok and doesn’t have any problems. But one thing is a problem for them, not many developers know to use their template. The solution for this is they should create an introduction paper or videos to introduce how to use their templates.

I think this project has clearly demonstrated in all aspects of the proposal that it will have a positive impact on the Cardano Ecosystem, because:

Paima Engine is a framework for building game and game use cases for blockchains. It already comes with many templates like board game, ai onchain, card game, rpg game and many more which can be found here: https://github.com/PaimaStudios/paima-game-templates

We want to build even more patterns, especially around gamification use cases such as

  1. Points system where users get points for actual actions (such as buying drinks)
  2. Traceability where an object's state updates As well as games and apps of different genres

We don't commit to any particular template because there are quite a few templates to choose from, and we want to avoid committing to specific templates that others may have created by the time Catalyst ends. This benefits Cardano by having many open source templates that entrepreneurs can use to launch their businesses. I rate this answer as GOOD ANSWER!

This project presents a compelling case for its positive impact on the Cardano ecosystem. By expanding the Paima Engine framework to facilitate the development of games and apps on Cardano, it addresses a critical need in the blockchain space. This expansion is expected to attract a broader range of developers and businesses, fostering ecosystem growth and encouraging innovation within the Cardano community. The success of the project will be measured by the adoption of the templates by developers, which will be generously open-sourced on Github, benefiting the entire community. This approach not only promotes transparency but also encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing among developers. The benefits of this initiative are multi-fold. Firstly, it simplifies the development process, allowing more developers to participate and contribute to the ecosystem. Secondly, it attracts users and developers alike, creating a vibrant and thriving ecosystem. Thirdly, it enhances Cardano's appeal to businesses looking to explore blockchain applications. Lastly, it elevates Cardano's status in the gaming and gamification space, positioning it as a platform of choice for innovative and engaging projects. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly support funding this valuable addition to Cardano. The project's potential to catalyze growth, foster innovation, and elevate Cardano's position in the gaming and gamification landscape makes it a strategic investment in the future of the Cardano ecosystem.

Well this proposal has already created ready-to-use game templates, and there are several game templates available for viewing at https://github.com/PaimaStudios/paima-game-templates. From a developer's perspective, this is very helpful as it eliminates the need to create a based game project from scratch, which is highly beneficial for us developers in the Cardano ecosystem. Paima Studios has been involved in numerous projects that support various ecosystems, not only Cardano. Additionally, Paima Studios has developed the Paima Engine, which is a useful API in the web3 game ecosystem. With this engine, developers no longer need to struggle with learning the code of web3 itself. With their existing web2 coding skills, they can easily deploy projects in the web3 environment. This is a significant advantage and convenience for us developers looking to transition into the web3 space.
