Detailed Plan

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Ed and Keith (see Team bios), with 12 years' experience building and financing MCA in SA, have a track record of accomplishment. An outgrowth of our original vision was the creation of Indlu Living, our sister firm, about which Charles Hoskinson in 2019 said the following: <https://youtu.be/M9ll4M814j8>

PROBLEM STATEMENT EXPANDED

We will merge the critical systems of the Cardano protocol including treasury, incentive, identity and governance systems with MCA, our school with a 10-year history and 120 students. We will do this to enhance the educational experience of our students while at the same time demonstrating the real-world utility of the Cardano protocol in an educational environment.

This is, however, complicated by the following issues:

 • Inadequate and expensive internet service.
 • A lack of the basic tools: computers, tablets, and computer training.
 • Limited technical, knowledge workers to assist with installation and implementation.
 • A limited supply of developers who can create the smart contracts and design the necessary systems.

SOLUTION STATEMENT EXPANDED

Given Cardano's vision of providing a new financial operating system for the world and particularly for the unbanked and disadvantaged of the world, it makes sense to 1) test its smart contract and treasury concept by improving the process of transferring charitable aid from donors to the MCA's Daedalus treasury account,2) use its token economy incentive system to motivate high levels of academic performance, 3) incorporate Cardano's identity system at MCA to provide our students with a digital identity and finally, 4) adapt Cardano's governance system so that Board members, staff, faculty, students and parents will have a voice in shaping the growth and directions of the school.

Our project represents something of a challenge to Cardano in that it provides an opportunity to test in an existing school with a 10-year history how the basic elements of its protocol can improve the lives of those it claims to want to serve, the unbanked and disadvantaged, particularly in Africa.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

With limited resources we have been able to create an independent school of 120 students in eight grades in Kwamhlanga, a poor township, located 60 kilometers north of Pretoria. Our target population is vulnerable children many of whom have lost parents to the AIDS epidemic. Our school, formerly Mukhanyo Christian Academy (MCA) changed its name to Musawenkosi Christian Academy (MCA) several years ago as one of several requirements associated with becoming registered as an independent school with the Department of Education of South Africa. MCA began in 2010 with 20 students, but now has grades R through seven with 120 students, staff of 17 and annual budget of $150,000. To appreciate the reality of the wonderful school which we have established Check out below the 6-minute video**"Kids Helping Kids"** which brings our school to life.

Currently, MCA, which is located on leased property, has purchased a 5-acre permanent site from the tribal chief of the region whose own school was shuttered due to the coronavirus.

CURRENT NEEDS AND OBJECTIVES OF MCA

 • Our committed teachers are paid 50% to 60% of what teachers in the government schools are paid. One of our objectives is to increase our teachers' compensation, improve teacher retention and create a retirement vehicle by providing each teacher with a Daedalus wallet, seed it with some ADA, and use it to incentivize both retention and excellent teaching.
 • Our school provides an education in 8 grades from Grade R (kindergarten) through Grade 7. We would like to expand the school to a full R through 12th grade school.
 • Our newly purchased property has five classrooms but will need significant additional classrooms and administrative facilities to provide for our school's needs.
 • We are currently raising funds to build out this property with our sister firm, Indlu Living, of which Keith Brown, one of our team members, is Chairperson. To fully appreciate the current status of our new property and how it will be transformed by a site plan design by Indlu Living with Indlu rental units on the perimeter of the property providing income for the school, download and open the second attached file to see the before and after photos..

GENERAL PLAN

We will create a microcosm of the Cardano protocol and it's constituent elements using Cardano smart contracts to create a token economy at MCA, our existing school of 120 students in grades R through grade seven. This will include:

 • Treasury System – use smart contracts to link donors to the school's treasury account.
 • Incentive System – use a tokens based reward system to motivate excellent academic performance.
 • Identity System – use Cardano's Atala Prism system to create an immutable identity for each student.
 • Governance System – Adapt Project Catalyst to provide a process for continuous improvement of the school.

DETAIL PLAN

We already have a significant Ada fund which we envision as the start of an endowment for the school. Initially we planned to use some Ada funds through smart contracts to incentivize student performance. Upon further reflection we decided to take a more holistic view of the situation. Consequently, we have taken the following steps and established some preliminary objectives for this project.

PHASE I: BUILDING A FOUNDATION

 • On May 6, 2021, on a trip to South Africa, Ed Rettig, Ph.D., a behavioral psychologist, introduced the blockchain, the Cardano protocol and Ada to the MCA Board of Directors to gain support for a grant proposal supportive of the idea of using MCA as a test case for the merger of the Cardano protocol with MCA. The Board unanimously approved this plan.
 • To educate the Board, staff, and faculty members about Cardano we plan to provide all key personnel with the tools, phones, tablets, or computers necessary for operating a Daedalus wallet. We will seed these wallets with a certain amount of Ada. The seed money will be paid for from our current Ada funds.
 • To ensure adequate internet connectivity we will seek to install a World Mobile repeating station at the school to increase data transfer speeds at a reduced price.
 • We will also explore and determine the appropriate legal and financial parameters for establishing an MCA school-based Daedalus account for receiving donations and distributing incentives for earned behaviors.
 • To facilitate this aspect of the program we will need to identify and recruit an individual or individuals with some basic computer and software knowledge to work part time as an implementer(s) with these key personnel. The cost of this aspect of the program will be identified in the budget.

Parallel with these activities we will begin working immediately on initial contracts identified below.

PHASE II: TESTING INITIAL SMART CONTRACTS

TREASURY SYSTEM – we will build out a process using Plutus and/or Marlowe smart contracts to nurture supportive relationships between donors and members of the school community (students, teachers, staff, and board members). Since we want to use the Treasury to receive donations from external sources without reinforcing the perception of a direct financial linkage between the donor and child and to avoid creating a sense of dependency, building constructive relationships with donors will only be one of many behaviors that may prompt rewards in the student's account. Students will, however, be taught that building positive relationships with a donor is a way for them to support their community. A more direct link between incentives and student academic performance will be established with rewards coming from the school. In this way we want students to learn that there is a direct connection between their performance and the impact on their life outcomes.

Major Donors – seeking a financial return while doing good.

Contract #1- We will demonstrate for major donors the potential return from investing in Cardano's ADA, i.e., 5% compounding reward from staking in an appreciating asset.

 • We will provide instructions on how to establish an account, stake the ADA and enter the contract.
 • The donor will be asked in the contract to commit a percentage of the staking rewards (minimum 50%) for a period (minimum one year) with the option to change terms at the end of one year.
 • Transfer of staking rewards to MCA will be triggered when periodic (perhaps quarterly or semi-annual) reports are sent to the donor.
 • The contract will be initiated when the donor deposits funds in the smart contract.

Relationship Donors – seeking a personal return in a caring relationship with a student.

Contract #2- Donors will be offered a contract in which they agree for a certain amount of money (e.g., $25 to $35) to be deposited automatically every month.

 • Release of these funds will be triggered and sent to the school's treasury account when a student as a participant in the contract sends some metadata in the form of a photo, a letter, test result or other relationship building information. A percentage of these payments (minimum 50%) will be credited to the student's wallet.
 • Students will be educated in how their behavior supports both the school by strengthening donor relationships and benefits themselves by earning rewards in their Daedalus account.
 • Given positive experience creating and implementing smart contracts we will, as funding permits, continue to experiment with the application of the Cardano methodology in our educational environment.

PHASE III:

IMPLEMENTING THE LARGER VISION – even while completing Phase I: Building a Foundation and Phase II: Testing Initial Smart Contracts we will be planning to implement the larger vision. This will be somewhat contingent on the increasing functionality of the Cardano smart contract system and may require additional funding in subsequent funds.

INCENTIVE SYSTEM – we will build a token economy reward system to motivate positive behaviors that support academic excellence and the development of strong character.

Students

 • Starting with the South African government's curriculum we will identify and define age and grade specific academic achievements and assign some relative value to their completion.
 • Other behaviors and activities which contribute to character development will also be identified, defined, measured, valued and reinforced.
 • Performance of identified tasks when confirmed by the teacher will trigger rewards through the system.
 • Each student will eventually be set up with a Daedalus account available for review periodically upon request and with permission. For the student this may be called their Education Fund.

Teachers and/or Staff

 • Behaviors for which teachers and/or staff will be rewarded will also be defined with assigned values and rewarded.
 • Each teacher/staff will be provided with a Daedalus account available for review at any time. For the teacher or staff this may be called their Futures Fund.

IDENTITY SYSTEM – we will integrate Cardano's Atala Prism identity system into MCA's administrative system to create a digital identity for everyone associated with MCA.

Cardano's Prism system

 • We will reach out to John O'Connor to learn about the system that is being used in Ethiopia with the intent of using this system with our students and staff at MCA.
 • We will integrate it as much as possible with MCA's current management system.
 • We will work with each student and his or her family to load identity information (birth certificate, family information, academic certificates, etc.) into Prism.

GOVERNANCE SYSTEM – We will integrate Cardano's governance system into the school's planning and development process and as such will involve the following.

 • Identify individuals and organizations who should have a voice in determining the direction of future development and continuing improvement of MCA.
 • Assign relative weight to individuals' and organizations' voting rights.
 • Submit continuing improvement proposals (CIPs) to the community for assessment, voting and selection.
 • This may be the most difficult task: trying to adapt the Project Catalyst model to governance at the local level.

Isaac has been involved with the school since its inception and will be integral in managing the development of the definition and implementation of the grade- and age-specific learning performance objectives that will underlie the motivating token economy.

Travis Carney is a full-stack web application and blockchain developer with over 25 years of development experience. He has worked on applications for companies including AT&T, Citibank, Nestlé, and Stamps.com.

Roscoe Lamontagne is an art director and platform designer, who has directed artwork for Harvard Medical, Springer Nature, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Austin Rettig, co-Founder and CFO of onecommune.com, a community driven wellness platform providing online health and well-being education courses. Mr. Rettig started his career in investment banking and has spent the last 25 years since developing and running operating businesses in his finance and CFO capacity.

NETWORK OF SUPPORTING SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS – There are many associated schools and organizations with which we have had significant relationships over the years or from which we have received significant support either in the form of funding and/or advice. These and other schools committed to serving children around the world represent the potential market.

PROGRAM DELIVERABLES - It is our conviction that this project will need time to mature because of its size and longer time frame. Some aspects will be contingent on developments in other parts of the Cardano project. Nevertheless, key objectives which we seek in the first two phases are:

Phase I: Building a Foundation – January - March 2022

 • Provide key personnel with adequate computer and communication equipment for providing access to Cardano and the Daedalus Wallet..
 • Improve internet connectivity by acquiring and installing a World Mobile repeating station.
 • Establish appropriate financial, legal, and organizational structure for the program.
 • Identify and procure adequate on-site implementers to support the program.
 • Begin creating initial smart contracts

Phase II: Testing Initial Smart Contracts – April– May 2022

 • Create, test, and install Contact #1 for major donors and sign up at least ten (10) users of the contract.
 • Create, test, and install Contract #2 for donors seeking to build a personal relationship with a student and sign up at least 10 donors using this contract.
 • Begin to identify academic behaviors to be rewarded in an incentive program in the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades.

We will initiate our project in January 2022 and anticipate launching our project by the end of June 2022 having met our objectives. Success means that by July 1, 2022 we will continue implementing this project and paying for it with our own funds.

I tried to add some files to last month's report but I don't think they arrived in a readable format. Would like to know and a way to submit them.
