Palawan is often called the Philippines’ last ecological frontier, home to most of the nation’s remaining forests, its waters are renowned as a global biological hotspot.

With weak or corrupt authorities often unwilling to take on the fight, the Palawan NGO Network Inc (PNNI) seeks to fill the void.

As cash-strapped environmentalists they believe traditional campaigning to save the island’s resources can do little to stop the corruption.

They use a little-known citizen’s arrest law, plus the support of local communities, to confiscate chainsaws, mining drills, cyanide fishing gear and any other equipment used to destroy Palawan’s environment.

The para-enforcers have confiscated more than 800 chainsaws since PNNI was established over three decades ago, according to its founder and leader, environmental lawyer Bobby Chan.

@streetsofada have partnered with PNNI to carry out a feasbility study to support their efforts and explore the feasibility of having on the ground through Cardano blockchain powered fundraising and community support. We have been developing Streets of ADA Art as Activism pieces without funding, for close to one year now, and have been successfully working to develop strategic partnerships to ensure local empowerment and the possibility for scaleability once we can demonstrate the proof of concept works.

Please define the positive impact your project will have on the wider Cardano community.

The success of Streets of ADA will include bridging new users who will be onboarded to the Cardano ecosystem from other chains and from outside web3.

Owning a Streets of ADA Proof of Impact NFT is one measure of contribution to the on the ground impact and support of closing the sustainability finance gap.

The missions carried on the ground such as tackling illegal logging and deforestation can be supported thanks to the purchase of Art as Activism pieces. As they are proof of impact NFTs that support the NGOs, impact data from the ground will be uploaded as metadata to the NFTs. This will help track the impact over time of each proof of impact art piece.

Emerging and established artists, locals, impact champions and eco warriors are invited to join the mission of protecting people and planet. By joining the Streets of ADA universe as a contributor, with the feasibility study we will explore the experimentation and possibilities around IP and royalties to catalyze the fusion of artistic entertainment, sustainable livelihoods and equitable outcomes.

The outputs and opportunities that result from the project will be shared via out gitbook, and social media channels (X, X spaces, partner websites etc).

How does the cost of the project represent value for money for the Cardano ecosystem?

The cost of supporting the feasibility study and intiatives carried out by Streets of ADA in partnership with their pilot partner Palawan NGO Network Inc (PNNI), represents a unique and impactful investment within the Cardano ecosystem for several reasons:

• Addressing Governance Gaps: In areas where authorities might be ineffective or corrupt, PNNI steps in to fill the void. This impact can be further supported in innovative ways thanks to the tools available in the Cardano ecosystem around transparency of impact data and track and trace of funds, and DAO incentivised impact evaluation from the local community.

• Innovative Approach: The project takes an innovative approach by utilizing lesser-known legal avenues (like citizen's arrest laws) and community support to combat environmental degradation. By matching this with Cardano's technological innovation, and a impact driven community, we have an organic grassroots community becoming users of the tools that will help drive positive change on the ground.

• Tangible Environmental Impact: PNNI's actions directly contribute to tangible results and this will be made possible and accessible thanks to Cardano's tools and Streets of ADA

• Partnerships and Innovative Fundraising: Collaborations with entities like Streets of ADA for fundraising and the development of Art as Activism Proof of Impact NFTs indicate diverse and innovative approaches to raising funds and support, something not widespread in the Cardano ecosystem nor in Palawan, the Philippines.

• Long-term Sustainability: Supporting PNNI fosters sustainability by protecting Palawan's environment and helps connect the Cardano community to measurable positive impact that can be learned from and emulated else where in other regions and localities thanks to the feasibility study learnings.

In essence, the cost incurred in supporting Streets of ADA and PNNI's efforts represents a strategic and impactful investment within the Cardano ecosystem. It not only addresses immediate environmental challenges but also contributes to fostering a more robust and ethically conscious ecosystem, aligning with Cardano's values and principles of supporting developing countries and pushing power to the edges.
