Context:

Suicide is the leading killer of men under the age of 50.

"For 20 years, self-harm rates have increased, particularly among young people, and have more than doubled in England since the turn of the millennium. Among those surveyed by Samaritans, three-quarters had harmed themselves more severely after viewing self-harm content online. Some 78% of people with lived experience of suicidality and self-harm want new laws to make online spaces safer. The internet can be an invaluable space for individuals to access support and to express difficult feelings, but its algorithms can also barrage people with content that encourages or exacerbates self-harm and suicidal behaviours."

Increasingly people are entering the online and digital world.

If you are reading this now, you are probably on your phone and on the internet.

From young people, to tech savvy entrepreneurs, the digital economy promises a world of opportunity.

Paradoxically, with the rise of digitalisation and increased connectivity in an ever shrinking, globalized world, with social media platforms accomodating over a billion users, the number of people feeling anxiety, depression, loneliness, social isolation, and mental health problems is on the up.

This proposal is a call to action and a litmus test to see if the Project Catalyst voting community resonate with the issues I am putting on the table.

I lost a childhood friend to suicide.

I have since spent the past 6-7 years trying to make sense of things.

I remember our last conversations vividly.

His downward spiral of physical and mental health, the weight of putting on a smile and a brave face despite chronic pain. This led to him going on sick leave and then unemployment…

There are millions of people in situations where the daily struggle of life can beat down on them.

Web3, Cardano and DAOs all promise a vision of a world and future where everyone is included, and can find a safe place.

These hashtags all don't mean a thing if in the real world the very same people writing them, reading them, are feeling pain and suffering, have nowhere to go, and can see no clear way to feel better.

This DAO will seek to create a dedicated space for those who have suffered with the loss of someone, or are dealing mental health challenges of their own, or know someone who is.

To offer a place to really connect with one another and uplift ourselves through stories, art, dialogue and purpose driven activities that help people find hope again through action.

DAOs can facilitate a unified force and collective, where the sum is greater than its parts. This can mean a lot to someone who feels isolated, without purpose, and lacking the support and inspiration that tomorrow, or the day after can and might be better.

This DAO will seek to engage all of the above and those who have found a way of healing through art, poetry, music, entrepreneurship, and positive action. Through these stories of triumph, of overcoming all odds, and with opening doors for collaboration, individuals of all backgrounds may start to believe in themselves and in a brighter future.

The technology is here merely to facilitate the coming together, creation and exchange of value.

Behind the scenes, and regardless of if this proposal is funded, I have been working on bringing together people from the Cardano community and in the wider world, from the across sectors, to create and support a collaborative multimedia art collection combining poetry, art, music, spoken word and funding for mental health programmes using Cardano4Good NFT technology.

The aim is to raise funds in support of mental health programs.

Important work is being done to support those who are suffering from mental health problems, and also those who are left behind when their loved one dies from suicide. However, such programmes and organisations are in a fragmented landscape, seen as inaccessible, and severely underfunded.

DAOs love Cardano and with love we can heal, ourselves and each other.

This Mental Health DAO can become the meeting point and place where all stories can intersect.

They say health is wealth. Let's invest in ourselves and each other from the inside out and the outside in, to have a strong foundation of which to build a better world, for all, and with all.

This DAO can become a model for the entire ecosystem.

Spread love, peace and awareness of things people are often uncomfortable sharing and talking about.

Bring about a force for change with collective resources and governance structures that provide innovative approaches to solving an age old challenge.

Give people a chance, a platform and dedicated place to share and find inspiration and hope during the highs and lows of life, and the 'market'.

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] Please provide a detailed breakdown of your project’s milestones and each of the main tasks or activities to reach the milestone plus the expected timeline for the delivery.

Month 1 Milestones:

Create a landing page
Create a sign up petition for the mission charter of the DAO
Use existing Cardano ecosystem tools to launch the Mental Health DAO
Establish Cardano community partnerships to support the mission, and develop partnerships with the wider ecosystem of blockchain4good, web3 and in the traditional world of institutions, governmental agencies, NGOs, social enterprises and individual champions/ambassadors
Have the governance structure in place and platforms (online and in real life depending on partnerships) to begin onboarding members who have signed up
Create campaign on partner fundraising websites and partner mental health organisations websites

Month 1 Deliverables:

Create a landing page/website
A petition/mission charter of the DAO that people can sign up publicly in support of the mission

Month 2 Milestones:

Launch the DAO to a group of initial testers
Open it up to the Cardano community and public
Create a repository of shared resources that can be accessed on a dedicated page/website/social media channel

Month 2 Deliverables:

Open DAO to initial test run and then for public access

If all of the above is delivered and there is indeed community support and demand (from the successful funding of this proposal, from sign-ups in support of the petition and mission charter beyond the people involved in this initial proposal write up, then we can explore further integrations and applications such as:

Create a token pool to support initiatives as a group using the DAO Governance tools (ie voting etc)
Create DAO IDs/tokens to symbolise membership which can be optional and can provide further benefits thanks to the CIP 68 dynamic NFTs tooling
Monitor and evaluate the ongoing impact of the DAO upon its members in their onwards journey via qualitative and quantitative data

[CAPABILITY/ FEASIBILITY] Please describe the deliverables, outputs and intended outcomes of each milestone.
The output is that there is an accessible DAO that is functioning according to its charter, a charter that has been signed by its members.
The charter will be shared open access as a model for others to learn from and apply in their setting if applicable and useful.
We hope that with the creation of the Mental Health DAO, even just 1 person is helped and supported to find a better way than if they hadn't learned of the DAO and the mission.

[RESOURCES & VALUE FOR MONEY] Please provide a detailed budget breakdown of the proposed work and resources.

The budget of 15,000 ADA is the minimum given the criteria of the challenge category:

20,000 ADA

It will be used to cover the project management, research and admin costs of setting up the infrastructure of the DAO and kickstarting it as a campaign.

Admin fees for a dedicated website and social media accounts and running them for the timeline of this kickstart.

Marketing and Communication (Social media posts, promotion of the DAO)
Videos from any meetings in relation to the DAO

Research to develop a pool token that is governed by members of the DAO, to fund and support impactful positive mental health initiatives and programmes eg fundraising campaigns, NGOs, social enterprises.

As this proposal is seeking Catalyst support to initiate action around having a positive impact in the lives of those with mental health challenges, and those who have been affected in their lives, I have sought to garner the attention and support of members of the Cardano community. Given that this is a global challenge larger than the Cardano community, one that concerns us all, I am actively reaching out to my community - family, friends, colleagues, and fellow changemakers across sectors, from across the world.

It is hoped that this amount will provide innumerable benefits, tangible and intangible, for those who join and participate. A positive multiplier ripple effect beyond the initial spend.

Not all benefits can be measured quantifiably.

I think it's a modest request of money to kick start a positive movement and action oriented cause in the Cardano community.

20k ADA is a small price for gathering and focusing interest on Mental health. If we reach one person, then it is worth it.
